We are committed to providing a nurturing and engaging environment that
values growth through problem-solving for every student.
Fairbrook students are respectful, responsible, trustworthy and kind.
From the Principal
Oh how time moves so quickly! We have almost completed the first quarter of the 2023-2024 school year. Teachers are preparing for parent conferences, updating data about student progress and gathering examples of student work so that you can see how hard your child(ren) work each day. Overall student behavior has been excellent, classrooms are running smoothly and the students are continuing to earn kindness confetti cards for demonstrating the Fairbrook Fundamentals of being respectful, responsible, trustworthy and kind.
All of our Fairbrook students have participated in a few different types of assessments since starting school this year. Your child’s teacher will be prepared to discuss these results with you during your parent/teacher conference. During conferences you can expect to hear from your child’s teacher about their progress so far in school and their performance in Math and English/Reading as it compares to other students in the same grade. These assessments were taken within the first weeks of school. The reason for the assessments is so our teachers are able to provide individualized/differentiated instruction in the areas of reading and math for each child. Our teachers are constantly analyzing patterns in student growth and adapting their instruction to meet student needs. Our goal is to help each and every student grow, academically and socially, to the best of their ability each school year.
Beginning October 12th at 6:30pm, we will host a parent book study in our multipurpose room. You can sign up to participate in this book study through the link: Thrivers, Parent Book Study. We are excited to learn more about how to help children THRIVE! If you can’t participate this time, we are hoping to offer another parent book study in the winter/spring.
And finally, next Friday, Oct 6th, we will celebrate one of our biggest events of the school year! Our Fairbrook Foxtrot! This has been rescheduled from tomorrow because the rain we've had has made our grounds too muddy. I would like to thank all of our parent volunteers and PTO members that worked so hard to make our Fairbrook Foxtrot a HUGE success! This is a massive undertaking and one can be guaranteed that the money will be used to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students as well as some fun for our students through the various programs that are brought to Fairbrook each year by our PTO!
As the weather gets colder, please make sure your child(ren) wear a jacket or coat. We will be going outside for recess unless the temperature drops below 20 degrees. Please write their name on the inside of the coat so if it is forgotten, we can return it to them. We already have a collection of lost and found. If your child is missing something, please check the barrel by our front doors or the tables in front of our office when you come in for your child’s conference.
Respectfully,
Joell

How to Become More Emotionally Intelligent
Did you know you can learn emotional intelligence? Children and adults alike can learn
to strengthen EQ.
To start, try reflecting on your level of self-awareness. For instance, are you aware of your
emotions? Do you understand how your emotions impact your beliefs and your behaviors? Do you notice how your behaviors impact others around you?
Also, try mindfulness techniques, it can help you become more present with your thoughts and emotions. For instance, instead of yelling at someone when you're upset, you might use a deep breathing technique to buy yourself some time, rethink your strategy, and react with more understanding.
Finally, social and emotional learning programs (SEL) are implemented in many schools to teach kids how to be emotionally competent. There are also SEL programs for adults. SEL helps people develop their sense of identity, strengthen communication skills, use empathy, and achieve personal goals.
In summation, remember you can always strengthen your emotional intelligence. Becoming
aware of how you think and feel, and how your actions affect others, is a great foundation for
building emotional intelligence.

Skills Lab Resources
Hello Fairbrook Families!
In October we are working on helping students choose websites, apps, online games, and other electronic media that are appropriate for them. We give children online boundaries to define their options and help them be responsible for their choices. While every family has different guidelines for what is acceptable for their child(ren); we all have one goal; to keep our child(ren) safe when they are online. At Fairbrook we use the analogy of a traffic light for younger students. This video from the Common Sense website is one that we use in class to help explain this concept to them.:

Older Students are playing The Traffic Light Game in class. Here is a link for that:

Here are some links families can use to reinforce choosing good online material for your child(ren) :
