Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month where the voices of the oppressed and marginalized Indigenous people are heard all month long, and hopefully all year long too. Take some time this month to learn about the traditions and cultures, including the music and dance of local tribes in your area.
Our Native American population, from the Iroquois Confederacy in the Northeast to the Apache and Navajo in the Southwest, and the Inuit in the far North, encompasses more than 500 recognized tribes, each with unique cultures and languages.
Native Americans have made remarkable contributions to society. Activists like Elouise Cobell, who fought for Native American rights in land and resource management, and Wilma Mankiller, the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, exemplify the determination and leadership within Native American communities.
During Native American Heritage Month, there are numerous ways to get involved and show support. In addition to attending local events, this is a great time to support Indigenous Artisans by purchasing authentic Native American crafts, artwork, and jewelry, or support their communities with a family trip to explore museums, heritage centers, and historical sites.
By honoring Native American history, we can foster greater understanding, respect, and unity among all Americans. This November, let us come together to celebrate the vibrant tapestry that is Native American heritage.
National Veterans and Military Families Month
November is also National Veterans and Military Families Month, where we show appreciation to all those serving in our military and veterans who have served. Give our service members and all veterans the appreciation they deserve for the sacrifices they and their families make for our freedoms. This month-long campaign acknowledges the unique challenges faced by military families and seeks to provide support, resources, and appreciation for their resilience and dedication. National Military Family Month also encourages communities, organizations, and individuals to get involved and show their gratitude to military families.
National Military Family Month has a rich history dating back to 1996 when it was officially recognized by the Armed Services YMCA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving military families. It has since gained national recognition and has become an important occasion for honoring and supporting military families.
Throughout the years, National Military Family Month has evolved into a nationwide effort to acknowledge the sacrifices and resilience of military families and to provide them with the appreciation and assistance they deserve.
There are several meaningful ways to get involved and show your support for military families during National Military Family Month:
- Express Your Gratitude: Take a moment to thank military families for their sacrifices and service to the nation.
- Donate to Military Support Organizations: Consider making a donation to organizations that provide assistance and resources to military families.
- Offer Assistance: If you know a military family, offer help with tasks like childcare, home maintenance, or meal preparation.
- Participate in Community Events: Attend local events and initiatives that celebrate and support military families in your area.
- Advocate for Military Family Support: Support policies and initiatives that benefit military families, such as affordable healthcare and educational resources.
Movember: Men's Health Awareness Month
Movember is an annual campaign that takes place in November to raise awareness for men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. During this month, men are encouraged to grow mustaches to spark conversations about these important topics and raise funds for research and support programs.
National Career Development Month
National Career Development Month 2023 is an annual observance dedicated to highlighting the importance of career development and planning. This month-long campaign seeks to empower individuals of all ages to take charge of their career journeys, make informed decisions, and pursue fulfilling and meaningful work. National Career Development Month provides a platform for career professionals, educators, and organizations to offer resources, guidance, and support for individuals seeking to enhance their career prospects and achieve their professional goals.
National Career Development Month was established to address the need for comprehensive career guidance and support. It is endorsed by career development organizations, educational institutions, and professionals who are dedicated to helping individuals make informed career choices.
Over time, National Career Development Month has grown into a nationwide initiative that encourages lifelong learning, skill development, and career exploration to promote personal and professional growth.
