ELA- Mr. Gasparovic & Mrs. Wells
In English this week, students read the final chapters (18-23) of Dear Martin. Lessons and slideshows (along with explanations) which complimented the novel included ‘Thinking about Groups As a Source of Issues’ and ‘Common Literary Themes’. In addition, an Online Thinkbook with prompts for students to write about the various aspects of the novel was assigned. Next week, students will have one final assignment which covers the themes and ideas from the novel.
Science- Mr. Geringer & Mr. Hayes
In science this week, students have moved into an investigation into how the ear works to hear sounds. They worked on some of the basic parts and functions of the ear, and then participated in an online hearing test. Their challenge project this week was to construct a simple speaker to amplify the sound from a cell phone. Several students reported that they had success with this challenge.
Social Studies- Mr. Gasparovic & Dr. Rachal
In social studies this week students were exposed to several personal accounts from several well known African Americans from the United States. The stories shared varied from first hand accounts of Jim Crow prejudice and oppression to understanding ancestry and connections to slavery. This activity allows students to see how slavery and racism in the United States continues to affect us today. Next week students will be learning about the music of the Civil Rights movement.
