Corona High School - A Tradition of Excellence Since 1896
Panther Families
As the year winds down we continue to have year-end celebrations and student recognitions. You will continue seeing these posted in the Panther Prowl. I want to make sure that families of senior students do not miss this year's Senior Awards Night to be held Monday, May 20th in our Performing Arts Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Last year our students collectively earned well over one million dollars in financial support. This year promises to be another rewarding year for the Class of 2019.
PHONE UPDATE: We recently had a new phone system installed that eliminated many of our old office lines. If you must contact one of our school/offices, please use only our direct line, 951-736-3211, and follow the prompts. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Respectfully,
Antonio Gonzalez, Ed.D.

Congratulations to the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble for both placing 2nd at the Music in the Parks festival at Six Flags Magic Mountain. The Symphonic Band earned a Superior rating and the Jazz Ensemble earned an Excellent rating. The spring band concert will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the PAC. Madrigals
- This spring has been productive and successful for the Corona High Choirs. In April the Madrigals returned from their National Heritage Festival in San Antonio Texas with a Superior rating, a trophy for Best Soloist, and an award for the most spirit and decorum. They then went on to receive another Superior rated performance at a Southern California Vocal Association Festival. Our Advanced Women’s Ensemble also attended an SCVA festival and were awarded an Excellent rating for their performance and their sight reading skills.
- This week, after a long period of auditions, the 2019-20 Madrigals and Advanced Women’s Ensemble were chosen and announced. The choir program at Corona High has a long history of excellence and our student are both excited and proud to be a part of it all. If you know of a panther of incoming student who would like to audition for a choir please email our director, Amy Eden to set up an audition time. aeden@cnusd.k12.ca.us
- The Spring Choir Concert is a 2-night event this year, May 22nd and 23rd at 7:00 pm. You can enjoy music from different genres, eras, and cultures on either night. May 2nd will feature our beginning choirs: Treble Choir, Baritone Choir and Concert Choir. May 23rd will feature our advanced choirs as well as some soloists. Attend one or both nights, you can’t go wrong!
Theatre Arts
Is your student interested in being a part of amazing shows and productions next year at Corona High School? Whether a senior or freshman, actor or technician, there is a spot for everyone in the Theatre Department. Anyone interested in being placed in Intermediate or Advanced Theatre next year may sign up for an audition time either with Ms. Horn in R-102 or at this link: https://forms.gle/w4kS5jtYMuST5oVv9. Please encourage your performer or technician to take advantage of this amazing opportunity!
NJROTC
- NJROTC will host our annual Military Ball on May 17th. This event will include awards, senior departure farewells, a change of command ceremony, dinner, and dancing. Invites will be sent out in the next few weeks and we look forward to a spectacular evening with parents, guests, and cadets!
-
During the month of May, NJROTC will conduct many honors with our Color Guard detail. Our team will perform at our Military Ball on the 17th, Corona High School Senior Awards Night the 20th, Veterans Day Celebration on 22nd, and Graduation on June 4th. If interested in having our honor guard perform at your next event, please contact 1st Sgt. Zinn (zinnje@gmail.com). It is always an honor and privilege to support our community
-
NJROTC has many activities over the summer! This year we will be sending cadets to Leadership Academy held at Camp Pendleton and Sail Academy held at Coronado Island in San Diego. Cadets who have been chosen qualified through a competitive and rigorous process where they will attend these summer programs and learn, perform, and test their skills to bring back next year for the purpose of advancing leadership and disciplines for our program.
Special Forces Day
Veterans Celebration
We will be hosting our annual Veterans Celebration in our Fieldhouse on May 22nd to honor our veterans and giving our juniors a rare and amazing opportunity to learn about the history of our wars and military by those who actually lived it. Every year we've had veterans from all our major wars since World War II (including Pearl Harbor survivors) and it is truly a fascinating experience to interact with our veterans. This is made possible by the efforts of our US History teachers in organizing this event. Below are a few random pictures from last year's celebration and here is the link to the Facebook page for more information:

Alumni News
Jess Hill Stadium
- At May 7th's CNUSD Board Meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve our proposal to rename Panther Stadium to Jess Hill Stadium. Jess Hill was a member of the Corona High School Class of 1925 and accomplished many milestones for Corona High School, the University of Southern California, and even served in the Navy during World War II. We will be conducting our official name changing ceremony at one of our home football games in the fall of 2019.
- Riverside Sport Hall of Fame (https://www.riversidesporthalloffame.com/jess-hill/): "Scholar….all-around Athlete.…successful Coach.…revered Legend. Before becoming a legend at USC, Jess Hill was an area legend, playing five sports at Corona High School and excelling at four sports at Riverside Community College. Jess was known at USC as “Mr. Trojan”. Beginning as a track competitor at USC, he set a record of 25’ 7/8” in the long jump. In football, he played on Troy’s 1928 National Championship team and in the Rose Bowl in 1930. He batted .389 for the Trojans in baseball and led the conference in hitting. Jess went on to play in the Major Leagues for the Yankees, Senators, and Athletics for nearly a decade after college. During the off season he coached at Corona High School and Riverside Junior College. Returning to USC after four years in the Navy during WWII, Jess was hired as the track coach. For two years, his squads were undefeated and won the NCAA Championship both years. From 1951-56 Jess was USC’s football coach and led his team to a Rose Bowl Championship in 1953. He became the Athletic Director in 1957 and held the position until 1972. During his tenure, USC won 29 NCAA titles, a U.S College record that has remained untouchable. Jess was named the Athletic Director of the Decade in 1967, and received the prestigious Corbett Award from the National Association of Coaches and Athletic Directors in 1972. He passed away on August 31, 1993 at the wonderful age of eighty-six. Jess Hill was truly a Riversider and Trojan of Excellence."
- In the second picture below from left to right are Don Williamson (Corona Class of 1972), me, Jim Pauly (Corona Class of 1945), and Jeff Stevens at the Corona History Association celebration where some knew Jess Hill or have family members that either knew or have worked with him in some capacity.

National Mental Health Month
- May is National Mental Health Month. It is a time when many organizations and groups strive to raise awareness of the struggles faced by those with mental health conditions. Because of the stigma, far too many people avoid asking for help with mental health problems, and the consequences of lack of treatment can be severe. The only way to remove the stigma is to take action to change society’s perceptions of people who are diagnosed with mental health conditions. What is Mental health? https://up2sd.org/mental-health-month/
Riverside University Health System – Behavioral Health will conduct community events and engage in community outreach to raise awareness and reduce stigma about mental health as part of Riverside County’s month-long observance of May is Mental Health Month. This national awareness campaign began in 1949 to promote a greater understanding of mental health and to support the wellness and recovery of those living with mental illness. https://www.rcdmh.org/mimhm
