Superintendent Briefing
January 2022
A Note from Dr. Hanson, Superintendent
Happy New Year
Dear Students, Staff, and Parents/Guardians,
I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday break and you had time to spend with family and friends. We will continue supporting each other throughout the remainder of the school year. Our strength and endurance are dependent on each other. We are better together, and together we will finish strong!
I want to start with a couple of reminders . . .
A reminder of our purpose . . . to prepare students to be productive, responsible citizens in a safe, caring, and supportive environment.
We have a short timeline to accomplish this purpose – 13 years from the time the student starts with us and walks across the stage.
Every day matters.
When the students return on Wednesday, we only have 85 instructional days to accomplish our 2021-2022 desired goals.
Our focus is to improve student success by continuing to
- building professional capacity with teachers and principals - to do our best;
- develop and implement systemic processes to ensure we are focusing on student and staff care and support, and
- provide the Professional Learning Time (PLT) for teachers to collaborate on what’s working and what’s not . . .
. . . so we are impacting the teaching and learning in EVERY classroom.
Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to doing what is right for our students and each other – it is appreciated. Let’s continue to make great things happen for our students and staff.
Have a great second semester.
Sincerely,
Ron Hanson, NPPS
Superintendent

Inclement Weather and School Closure Reminders
As winter weather has taken its place in our school year, we want to remind you of the following NPPS inclement weather notifications, procedures, and protocols.
NPPS inclement weather procedures and information below can be found on page 17 of the 2021-2022 Student Handbook.
Building or weather conditions may necessitate a change in the normal hours school is in session. The decision to close schools, delay starting times, or dismiss early is made by the superintendent. School closing information will be announced via the school district’s phone messaging system and by the following local radio stations:
RADIO STATIONS
KX104 FM
KELN 97 FM
KOGA 99.7 FM
KODY 1240 AM
KJLT 94.9 FM
970 AM
TV STATIONS
KNOP Channel 2
NTV Channel 6
KNPL 10
School Closing
If a decision is made to close schools, the announcement will be made by the local radio stations and KNOP by approximately 7:00 a.m. The decision not to have school is made by the superintendent after he made the following contacts, when appropriate:
1. The City Street department to check the street conditions in the city
2. The school maintenance staff to determine if they can manage snow removal in the immediate areas of the schools and school entries
3. The area station of the National Weather Service for an estimate of the length and severity of the storm or cold weather.
Delayed Starting Time
In some cases, it is advisable to delay the starting times to allow more time for snow removal. Announcements to this effect will be carried by local stations by approximately 7:00 a.m.
Early Dismissal
Sometimes weather worsens during school hours, making it advisable to dismiss students before regular dismissal time. It shall be the philosophy of the district to avoid early dismissal if at all possible except in extreme cases. Parents who wish to remove their children during inclement weather may do so. In the event of an early dismissal, the information will be announced by the local radio stations. Parents will be asked to pick up their children as soon as possible.
In the event school is dismissed early due to the weather all schools will follow these procedures:
1. Students will remain with their teacher until a parent or guardian comes to the office to pick them up. This is for the safety of our students.
2. Parents will need to be patient in picking up students as the traffic will be hectic outside of school.
3. If a parent is having someone else pick up their child, then a phone call should be made to the school office indicating who that person is. No child will be released to someone other than a parent/guardian unless the school has been notified. This is for the safety of our children.
The final decision as to weather a child should attend school or stay at home is the responsibility of the parents.

The NPHS National Honor Society's Giving Christmas Service Project
Collaborating with Student Services, NHS students secured Christmas gifts and monetary donations for this project. Ten elementary school students in our district received a box full of Christmas gifts. Seven families in need received a package full of holiday meal essentials, including non-perishables and a $25 gift card to the grocery store for perishables.
Thank you to Molly Morales, who coordinated closely with us on this project; A to Z books, who donated one book per child; Wal-Mart, for a $50 donation; the (Maddie) Hatch family and Olivia Huff, who donated wrapping paper and supplies; and Beatriz Reyna from KNOP for following our progress.

1:00 pm – Until Food is Gone
This is an OPEN AIR, DRIVE THRU Distribution. Patrons will drive their car through a line, and volunteers will bring the boxed food to the car. Free of charge. 325 Households will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Food Bank of Heartland sponsors the Food Pantry.
Please start the line OUTSIDE of the school parking lot next to the tennis courts. DO NOT COME INTO THE PARKING LOT PRIOR TO THE SEMI UNLOADING THE DISTRIBUTION ITEMS.
If you are in the parking lot prior to the gates opening, we will ask you to move your vehicle. When the mobile distribution begins, cars can drive up to the gate by the Northeast corner of the football field. Patrons will drive through the alley between the football field and the high school building, exiting on West A Street. Use only the entrance closest to the tennis courts to avoid congestion as students leave after school. While waiting for the distribution to begin, you need to follow all traffic laws. Do not block driveways or streets for any reason. Safety is our number one concern, and we do not want anyone to get hurt.
