LMS e-blast
12 January 2022
Important Message from Administration
Please continue to utilize the designated car lane in the morning to drop your student off at school. Please do not go to the second row because this will have your student crossing through traffic; help us keep all of our students safe on the LMS campus.

Lynchburg City Schools is highlighting our teachers and staff and would like input from families. Please take a few minutes to tell us about a teacher or staff member who is positively impacting our school division. This could be a great teacher, your wonderful bus driver, or that staff member who is always willing to help in some way. Please complete the form to tell us all about the person you have chosen. You may complete the form more than once to acknowledge multiple employees.
FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday
Monday, January 17, 2022 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Lynchburg City Schools will be closed. Teachers and students do not attend school on this day.
Kid’s Haven Grief Support Group is Gearing Up
LMS will be partnering once again with Kid’s Haven and offering small support groups for students who have experienced a loss. If you have an interest in having your student included in this program, please contact Mrs. James (A-J) or Mr. Carr (K-Z) about receiving a permission form. See additional information below.
Kids’ Haven school groups provide a place where children and teens who have experienced a life-changing death loss can come together to be part of a community. Through participation in facilitated peer groups, they find understanding, stability and support. School groups can provide grief support for children during the school day which is especially helpful for children who may be unable to access our Family Group Night meetings. Our support groups are facilitated by trained grief volunteers. Groups are held in a welcoming, and safe environment. Groups meet every other week throughout the school year. Grief related themes are explored in the groups through games, art activities and discussion. Our peer groups and services are offered free of charge.
Also Available: Kids' Haven's Family Group Night is dedicated to children ages 3-18 and their families. Group Nights are held on 1st and 3rd Monday evenings at 6p.m unless it falls on a LCS school closing or holiday. Dinner is served at 6:00pm as families arrive. At 6:40pm we adjourn and each age level group goes to their own group time. We have a children, teen and adult group.

Donations Needed
We are restocking our SPOT store and are asking for donations for items that students might be interested in spending their points on. Students earn points for demonstrating LMS’s expected behaviors and enjoy purchasing items from the SPOT store. If you are interested and/or able, please consider donating items. Students love snacks and drinks (limited sugar, please) as well as fun or cute accessories, decor, figits, sports related items, etc. Larger items can be used as raffle items where the students use their points for a chance to win bigger ticket prizes. Ask your student for some great ideas and drop them off in the main office. We would be SO APPRECIATIVE!! If you have questions, reach out to Rene James (jameser@lcsedu.net) or Ayanna Allen (Allenan@lcsedu.net).
Additional reminders/updates:
Report cards were sent home with students on Tuesday. Be sure to ask your student for theirs and encourage them to set new goals for this quarter.
Letters will be sent home by the end of January to parents/guardians of any student at risk of failing a course for the year.
8th grade students will be completing their Academic and Career Plans if they were not able to be done last year. This will happen through PE classes on Friday, January 14.
6th grade students will have the opportunity to attend The Reality Store on February 7th and 8th. Our media center will be converted into a game of “LIFE” and students will be assigned a career and family (assigned randomly) and then have the experience of purchasing life essentials, such as housing, transportation, childcare, entertainment, food and medical care and more. This will jump start our conversations about future planning and prepare us for course scheduling for next year that will happen through Science classes in March.
Tutoring
Remember we have a FREE AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM available for students who have afternoon transportation. Please use the link to access the form to sign up.
Let’s help our kiddos start this semester with attainable goals, good organization, and a predictable time and place to work on homework. Summer school will be required for students who do not pass a core class and retention in their current grade may happen for students who do not show mastery in core subjects. Let’s help them stay ahead!
Food 4 Thought Weekend Food Bags
In past years, weekend food bags have been provided by Food 4 Thought & Park View Community Mission and are once again being offered to families who may have a need for additional food stability on the weekends. Permission forms are available in the main office or by contacting Mr. Carr. Food bags are sent out on Fridays.

French Class Festivities
On January 6, Mme Dodgion's French Enrichment classes enjoyed learning about " All King's Day" (La Fête des Rois) and how the French celebrate this festive day. Students read about the King's cake (la galette des rois) and watched a video on how the "king" or "queen" is chosen for the day within the family. Students also made their own crowns. A "king" and "queen" were chosen for each class.
6th period King & Queen: Denver Ramsey & Leann Vandendriesche
8th period King & Queen: Kenny Gonzalez-Baeza & Betsy Wood
