Three to Try!
These Web 2.0 tools are great for communicating with parents. If you are interested in any of them and need assistance let me know.
Seesaw
Seesaw is an online portfolio system that is FREE! Kids can upload images, videos, audio, drawings and more. Once uploaded, these artifacts can be view by parents (and if allowed, receive comments from parents). It can be used as young as kindergarten. Get ideas for activities to do with Seesaw: http://help.seesaw.me/hc/en-us
Tweet the fantastic things you are doing each day! Gain new ideas from like-minded educators! Twitter is an amazing tool whether used for self-guided PD or with students. Check out a Twitter guide for teachers here.
Remind
Remind is a great way to communicate with parents. It is a one-way communication tool (but now allows for two-way communication if you would like) that allows you to send short messages to parents. Examples include reminders about upcoming assignments, school events, and positive messages. You can embed your Remind messages right into your class website, too!
Potential Project!
Last year several Coonley classrooms started the year by having students write goals. They recorded these goals using the app Audioboom. Audioboom allows for up to 10 minutes of audio recording for free (with unlimited recordings) and automatically generates a QR code for each clip. Teachers then had students draw self portraits or took photos of their students holding their QR codes. These were placed on desks during open house for parents to listen to! See examples below, and please let me know if you are interested in this!
Twitter Tips!
Could you imagine if each teacher took just 10 minutes a day to read through and like/comment on their colleague's tweets? We'd have a greater opportunity to learn from each other as well as build community. Once you start to follow a large group of people it sometimes is difficult to pick out tweets from certain folks only (i.e. your colleagues). Solve this problem by creating Twitter Lists! I follow over 1,300 people but can easily find Coonley teachers by compiling them in a list. See my list here. Learn more about Twitter lists here.
