What's Been Going on at Cardinal Pole
Headteacher's Message
The first term of the year is drawing to a close and so much has been achieved by staff and students. Our students have been very busy, sitting their AP1 exams, masterclasses and revision sessions with great focus and a calm approach. They have attended various workshops provided by external providers on Poetry, English Literature/Language, Road Safety as well as numerous careers and apprenticeship workshops from Arsenal FC, Allen & Overy, the NHS and HB Reavis.
With Advent in full swing, Catholic Life retreats for the Sixth Form have taken place, Remembrance Day celebrations, Carol singing at Tesco and numerous fundraising events for our Advent charities including the Catholic Children’s Society, Hackney Food Bank, St Vincent Charity shop, The Passage and CAFOD.
You will be aware that our own Ms John won the Future Ed Award for Mentor of the Year which is a tremendous and long overdue recognition of over two decades of service to our young people here at Cardinal Pole Catholic School. A truly deserved accolade!
Students are now reaping the benefits of all their hard work over the past few weeks with reward trips and treats taking place this week for all year groups including bowling, the cinema, a Christmas market trip to Lille, a Carol Service, Christmas Jumper Day and a fully funded Christmas lunch. These experiences and events are not possible without the support and enthusiasm of our staff and I am sure you will join me in thanking them. I also wish to thank you for all the support you have provided us this term. Our community is truly a joint partnership between home and school. I wish you, your family and all who are dear to you a most blessed and Holy Christmas.
Yours in service,

Year 12 Volunteering - Chats Lunch Club
At the beginning of November, our Year 12 students attended the Chats Lunch Club to serve lunch to members of the local community.
Parent Workshop
Thank you to all of our parents who attended our second parent workshop of the year. We looked at how to support your child with exams and revision.
Cardinal Pole Poetry Anthology
We launched our "Cardinal Pole x First Story Anthology", which features work written by our gifted students in Years 8-11.
A big thanks to Mr Gee who held writing workshops after school for several months last year. Copies are available in our Library.
Rewards Trip
All year groups were rewarded this term with the chance to go bowling or to the cinema! Students and staff had a great time celebrating the successes of the term.
Christmas Jumper Day
Staff and students came in waves of red this Christmas Jumper Day, everyone was filled with the Christmas spirit during our whole school Christmas dinner and the day was overflowing with joy!
Catholic Life
Charity Giving
Year 7s were very generous with their donations to the Catholic Children’s Society (CCS) toiletries drive and brought in over 80 items. A group of students also helped to load up our donations in the pickup car and greeted our CCS outreach volunteer.
Liturgies
To finish our school term with worship on the last day all year groups celebrated with a liturgy. Students from the drama club performed a Spoken Word of the nativity story and a group of students sang ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’. We reflected on the greatest gift God has for us this Christmas season, which is to simply spend time with Him above all else.
Carol Singing
To fundraise for their year group Charity, Years 7 and 8 fundraised at Tesco singing Carols for the local community!
Year 7 Carol Service
The Year 7 sang beautifully during the annual Year 7 Christmas Carol Service, it was a highlight of the Advent season it was wonderful to hear the 200 voices of staff, students and parents praising the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Lord thank you for our first school term,
for all the experiences and joys.
During our Christmas break,
help us to simplify our activities,
so we can rest well and focus on our celebration of Your son’s birth.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
What a great term! Many ways that we as a school community served each other and grew closer to the Lord. As we dive into the Christmas break let us remember God showed us this love to us by sending His only Son into the world. I will be praying for the school community this Christmas season. May you have a joy-filled break and may the good Lord bless you all.

Mary
As a former Cardinal Pole student, the teachers and school’s ethics caused me to stay at the school. The respect our teachers had for each other, for us students and their subjects uplifted me and made me question whether I could find this energy anywhere else. My drama teachers enlightened me on the subject, talked me through university and reassured me about my doubts surrounding my future. I, now, study the A-level subjects of Drama, Media Studies and Psychology. Truthfully, it hasn’t been the easiest of transitions going from Year 11 to Year 12 as I am doing subjects I’ve never done before but our teachers do their best to emotionally and educationally support us.
Wendy
Transitioning into Sixth Form has been a good challenge and I am adapting well. Due to being a former secondary school student at Cardinal Pole, I am comfortable as I know the teachers and the school help with supporting my next steps. I chose to stay at Cardinal Pole Sixth Form because the support here is what I needed as A Levels are certainly a step up from GSCE but staff members have helped me manage well. Choosing to stay at Cardinal Pole was 100% the right decision for me as Cardinal Pole will help me with future opportunities and my journey to university.
Faith
Moving from Year 11 to Year 12 has been a hard but exciting experience for me. In Year 11, I studied Drama which is a course I very much want to pursue in the future, my GCSE led me to choose A-level Drama and Theatre Studies. This term Drama has been amazing, I’m really enjoying how my devising work is coming together, this project and my time in Sixth Form are allowing me to take responsibility for my learning not just in Drama but also for my other two subjects, Sociology and Media Studies.
Assessment Point 1
In the week commencing 11th December, Cardinal Pole students were hard at work sitting their AP1 exams. All students from Years 7-10 rose to the challenge of a week of exams with considerable maturity and impressive focus. Twice a year, the whole school comes off the timetable to allow students the opportunity to sit rigorous exams in all of their subjects. This is to prepare them for future public exams in Years 11, 12 and 13 and to ensure that what they have learned so far has been properly consolidated before moving on.
It is critical that our students secure a firm foundation of knowledge before moving on to the next phase of their learning and these assessments enable us to see what they know and what they do not know yet so that teaching can be adapted for lessons which promote a love of learning and subject mastery.
In assessment week, the whole school day changes with students attending only three sessions over the day. The results of these exams are reported to parents in the New Year and are analysed by departments to ensure that Spring Term teaching closes any gaps and promotes progress for all.
All students sat formal exams in English, Maths, RE and Science (in Y10, this is examined separately as Biology, Chemistry and Physics).
In KS3, all students also sat papers in Geography, History and either French or Spanish
There were practical assessments in Art, Computer Science, Drama, Music (written in Year 8) and Technology (Year 7 only)
All students had PE and in Year 8, a wellbeing session to talk about how to look after ourselves during exams
In KS4, all students sat papers in each of their 3 option subjects
Specialist masterclasses in English, Maths, RE and Science were given to all students before their exams in core subjects.
During this week, Years 11-13 also had specialist subject study days to prepare them for their mocks which are fast approaching at the end of January and we wish them the very best of luck with these.
All that is left to say is a huge congratulations to all students for their approach to these assessments and that they continue to build on their progress this term as we move into 2024.
