September, 2020
Greetings Islip Middle School Students and Parents,
Welcome back to a new school year. While this year will begin differently than we would prefer, we will do our best to make it a friendly teaching and learning environment for all entering our school. This year we will focus on “Look Good! Feel Good! Do Good!”
Look Good is all about health and safety. Do you look healthy? Do you look like you have a temperature? Do you look ill? Does the environment look safe?
Feel Good takes into account your social and emotional well-being. Do you feel comfortable coming to school? Do you feel anxious? Does the environment make you feel stressed?
Do Good includes teaching and learning. Do you have what you need to teach and learn? Do you need anything to be successful today? Is there anything preventing you from doing your academic best?
At IMS, our concentration will be on Looking Good and Feeling Good, prior to Doing good. After all, if a child does not look healthy or the environment does not look safe and they feel uncomfortable and anxious, teaching and learning will not occur.
I am aware parents and students are eager to receive their cohort sections and teams. Please know, that the students who are selecting a full five day a week remote learning scenario does change our social distance protocols. In doing so, we are seeking to balance the classes as best we can. The requests are still being forwarded so we are continually updating class lists. We appreciate your understanding as we navigate this information in the best interest of the health and safety of our students. We plan on having schedules posted in the coming days.
Until next time, feel free to watch the “welcome back video” and visit our e-Board in reference to the opening of Islip Middle School.
Thank you in advance for your understanding during the opening of this school year.
Wishing all a healthy return and a Happy New School Year!

On behalf of the Islip Middle School teaching and learning community, I am thrilled to welcome our students and families to the 2020-21 school year. To our 6th grade students and families, I would like to personally welcome you to IMS. We are eagerly awaiting your arrival.
I am so excited to be starting my second year as the Assistant Principal here at IMS. The IMS experience will look a bit different this year, not only for our incoming 6th graders but also for our returning 7th and 8th graders. Although it will be a bit different than in the past, our compassionate staff will be ready to help with all students needs every step of the way. I am certain it will be an amazing journey. Our journey will begin together on either September 9th or 10th depending on your cohort. As our journey begins there are a few things that I would like to remind you of. Everyone in our building will be wearing masks, while also maintaining appropriate social distancing. We will not be using lockers at this time, so to make movement throughout the building as easy as possible for students, we are asking for them to only bring minimal supplies, such as a notebook, folder, and pen or pencil. Students may also bring in a personal device if they choose.
If you are reading this, you already know about our IMS Connection newsletter, but that is not the only way to keep up to date with everything happening at IMS. Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to catch photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our eBoard has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail jcohen@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.
Regards,

In a socially distanced world, PTAs are more important than ever in connecting parents, teachers and administrators, and supporting critical school needs.
