This Week at GLOBE
News & Notes | April 27, 2022
A message from the Board of Directors
On Monday evening, we held the scheduled meeting of GLOBE’s Board of Directors. As always, we thank those of you who were able to join us, and we'd like to take this opportunity to recap some key takeaways for those who weren’t.
Specifically, we want to update you on our plan for managing the Lower Campus facilities — both to keep everyone safe and healthy in the immediate term and to ensure the facilities will be ready for the start of the next school year.
Most immediately, that means installing window AC units in three classrooms and running industrial dehumidifiers on the lower level; if any emergency breaks or leaks occur, we will conduct thorough repairs and remediations promptly.
During the summer, we will continue running the dehumidifiers, and we will regularly check for humidity and any signs of moisture or mold. In July, we will conduct air quality testing and complete any necessary remediation, which may include a deep cleaning to ensure the facilities are ready for the start of the new school year.
This brings us to the discussion of our master facilities plan. As we’ve previously mentioned, we are in the early stages of the exciting work of designing GLOBE’s forever home. In the weeks ahead, we will be identifying the right firm to steward this project with us; we will also begin planning for the considerable capital expenses that will be involved. You can expect to hear much more on this soon, as we will be seeking input from all of you (and your students)!
Lastly, a few notes about meetings:
- We elected to move the June board meeting from June 28 to June 21 at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there. The schedule of board and committee meetings can always be found on Board on Track.
- As we prepare for the next school year, we welcome your input on making the board meetings accessible. Please let us know if you prefer to engage virtually or in-person.
- In May, we will have two public meetings where you’ll have an opportunity to review the proposed operational budget for 2022–23. (Note that this budget is entirely separate from the budget for the capital budget for our facilities improvements.) Those meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, May 11 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, May 18 at 9 a.m. Access links will be available on Board on Track.
Sincerely,
Drew Reynolds
Chair, Board of Directors
Lillian Norton
Vice Chair, Board of Directors

New appointments at GLOBE
We would like to introduce some new faculty and staff members to our GLOBE community.
Director of Operations
Our new Director of Operations, Cortney Flowers, will be joining GLOBE at the beginning of May. In January 2022, Cortney marked her 10 years of providing critical facility, infrastructure, and management services for students, staff and urban school setting community members. Born in LaGrange, GA and raised in The Bronx, NY, explains why Cortney often describes herself as having city street smarts with a dose of southern hospitality. She is very much looking forward to getting started!
Some other exciting new appointments, that will take effect at the beginning of the new school year, are as follows.
Lower Campus Assistant Head of School
GLOBE recently appointment Ms. Kim Chung as of our new Lower Campus Assistant Head of School. Currently an EIP teacher at a charter school in Smyrna, Ms. Kim has previous experience as a Kindergarten and first-grade teacher, ESOL teacher, and even a founding elementary school principal at a charter school in Philadelphia. In the coming weeks, Ms. Kim will be spending time on campus, getting to know more about GLOBE and our community.
Upper Campus Assistant Head of School
GLOBE is delighted to announce that our 8th grade teacher, Joan Marks, will be serving as our new Upper Campus Assistant Head of School. Joan has over 20 years of teaching experience in various settings. She has been through Teacher's College training for Readers and Writer's workshop. She has held multiple teacher leader positions in the various schools she has served. She is excited to move into this role and serve the staff, students, and parents of Upper Campus.
Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Coaches
GLOBE 6th grade Language Arts teacher, Megan Tolbert, will be our new Upper Campus Curriculum and Instruction Coach. With over 13 years of experience in Middle School Instruction, and 7 of those being with Reading and Writer's workshop, as well as extensive experience in Understanding by Design, Constructivism, teaching with CREST, and leading PLC's, we are certain that Megan will be a key component in coaching our teaching staff as we look forward to a spectacular year ahead.
Lisa Dibble will be the C&I Coach of Lower Campus and Zakia Funchess will be the Data Coach at Upper Campus. Our current interim Lower Campus Assistant Head of School, Christina Catinella, will be moving into the Data Coach position at LC.
You’ll be hearing more from our new faculty and staff members in the weeks to come.

We are very proud of the team and all of our athletes at GLOBE. To our knowledge, this is the first conference championship title in school history. Congratulations to the team and coaches!

Athletic wear
Visit our Sideline store and check out the April special offers on GLOBE athletic wear.
COVID Corner
Beginning on Thursday, April 21, GLOBE started to see a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases at Lower Campus, including known instances of in-school transmission. Given this surge in cases and to prevent further spread, we are encouraging all members of the GLOBE community to return to universal masking through Friday, April 29.
This change will help keep our community as healthy as possible, and help us to continue our in-person learning. We are grateful for your partnership. If you have questions about COVID-19 at GLOBE, please email Rachael at health@theglobeacademy.net.
Viral Solutions will be back on campus again tomorrow, April 28, to provide all GLOBE students and staff with access to free rapid antigen testing. The positivity rates of each testing clinic can be found on tab 2 of the Data Dashboard.
Updated mask policy
On March 7, 2022, The GLOBE Academy updated its mask policy for all students. The full policy can be reviewed here. Although masks are not required for entry into the school building, if your child is showing signs and symptoms of COVID-19, please seek a negative COVID-19 test (rapid at-home or rapid/PCR at a testing location) before sending them back to school. Please also have them wear a mask at school until their symptoms improve.
Admissions
We understand that plans can change. If your student’s plans to return to GLOBE have changed from “yes” to “no” between now and the start of the 2022 school year, please complete this form. Having an accurate count for the school year allows us to plan and budget appropriately or allows a student from our waiting list to fill the open spot.
Resource links
This newsletter is intended for the families of GLOBE students. Please share your feedback, so we can continue to improve how we disseminate information about what's happening at school. As always, you can find the school menu (remember, lunch and breakfast are free for all who want them this year), the academic calendar, and family handbook on our website.
