Principal Message

Dear Oscar Howe families,

It is hard to believe December is already here! We know the holiday season is a busy one for many of you. This is true within our school walls too as we are in the middle of our second quarter learning.

Starting in December students will be completing their Winter MAP testing. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to show what they know and how much they are growing in their understanding of reading and math.

Safety continues to be a priority to us here at Oscar Howe:

• Please remember to stop at crosswalks when children/parents are present at them.

• In our south parking lot, during morning drop off please pull all the way forward. This allows us to get more vehicles in the parking lot at once.

• In our north parking lot, please be mindful that there are no left turns from the parking lot onto Valley View Road during our morning and afternoon drop-off times.

• As colder weather draws near, children go outside if the temperature (including windchill) is above 0 degrees. Please make sure they have their cold weather gear with them every day.

We know this time of year is filled with anticipation as the holiday season draws near. We continue to focus on our PACK expectations to support students in their learning. We know routines help students stay focused and regulated. Thank you for your continued partnership!

Reminder from the Office:

Cold Weather: As the temperatures lower it is very important to make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Students will have morning and afternoon recess unless it is below zero. Keeping your kids dry and warm outside during winter can make the cold weather months much more enjoyable.

Messages: If you have a message for your student's teacher please attempt to contact them first before calling the office. If you do not have an email address for your student's teacher please let the office know and we can provide you with that.

Attendance: Many parents are taking advantage of our new attendance request processor. If you have yet to try it, it is a very convenient way to notify the school of an absence. One thing we have seen is if a student is coming in late, we do not know if that student will need a hot lunch. If you could note in the comment section hot or cold lunch that would be greatly appreciated.

Please Consider Donating

Accidents happen, from slips and spills to bathroom accidents. We are asking families of our younger students and/or those prone to accidents to pack an extra set of pants and underwear in their backpack. If you receive a bag with dirty clothes and your student is wearing borrowed clothing please wash these items as soon as possible and return the clean clothes to the health office. We have a limited supply of donated clothing for these situations. We are still asking for leggings or sweatpants, size Youth XS - Youth L and would like to donate them to the school we would greatly appreciate your donation.

Child Nutrition Program

We are lucky enough to have two dieticians working for your kids here in the Sioux Falls School District. Each month we would like to share a little tip to encourage healthy habits for your whole family! Currently we are emphasizing ware intake! Adequate hydration often falls lax this time of year.

Meal Viewer

The SFSD will be using Meal Viewer (MV) to post breakfast and lunch menus online. Please reference this menu online whenever possible because it will be updated in real time.

How to set you your account.

Go to: https://schools.mealviewer.com/

Find Your School - type in Oscar Howe and enter. Select OHE.

Click “Create A Profile” – enter birth date, must be 18 or older to create an account, otherwise only a student version of the menu will be available.

Follow the prompts:

Select parent

Enter child's name

Pick child's profile color

When asked Where does “Student” go to school? Type in Oscar Howe and it should pull up. Identify any allergens, if none then click next.

Complete Setup or Add another student at this time.

Once your profile is created you will be able to see both the breakfast menu and lunch menu.
