On Monday, we will celebrate Labor Day and this is a Student and Staff holiday. We are excited to resume our work of growing together on Tuesday! Here is a quick history about Labor Day and how it became a National Holiday.

3rd grade is learning....

Writing Numbers up to 999,999

Mathematicians will focus this week on understanding that numbers can be represented in various forms. Mathematicians will write numbers in standard, expanded, and word form.


386=three hundred and eighty-six=300+80+6


You can help you child at home by working with them on writing numbers as words and reviewing the value of numbers in various places in a number (place value). There are numbers everywhere that can be used to make reviewing fun!

Force and Motion

Scientists will be introduced to Force and Motion. Scientists will engage in learning vocabulary, concepts and practicing through labs during this unit of study.

Mapping Our World: Longitude and Latitude & Spatial Hierarchies

Explorers will continue learning about different map skills. The students will be expected to locate continents and oceans, locate the four hemispheres using longitudinal and latitudinal lines, and understand connections between Earth's systems (cities, states, countries AND forests, oceans, mountains, and rivers).

ELA

In ELA this week 3rd Grade Scholars will use the text, The Islanders by Mary Alice Monroe, which they started reading last week. Scholars will use the text to identify character traits, motivations, feelings, and how their actions impact the story.


To support understanding of phonics, scholars will review OG Concept 33: -ss, -ll, -zz, -ff.

3rd grade Project Goal

In Project Goal, Scholars will be learning how to use Draw a Picture Problem Solving Strategy. Scholars will be identifying Cause & Effect through analogies. Scholars will also begin their study of the Space Race: Then and Now.

ELA: Author's Purpose

This week in ELA, Scholars will learn to identify the Author's Purpose for writing. Author's Purpose is easy as P.I.E. (Persuade, Inform, Entertain).

5th Grade is Learning...

Compare and Round Decimals

Mathematicians will review and learn new concepts associated with comparing and rounding decimals. Mathematicians will take the Topic 1 Assessment.

Scientists will answer the question: How Can We Identify a Mystery Substance? Scientists will build vocabulary, learn new concepts, and participate in labs to support learning.

Push and Pull Factors

Explorers will identify motivations for moving including push and pull factors.

ELA: Start Novel Study; Root "man, manu"

This week Scholars will begin reading, Sign of the Beaver, as part of their ELA block and support for the 5th grade Social Studies content. Scholars will read to answer the question: How does perspective affect the plot? Scholars will study homophones and homographs (2 weeks).

Scholars will continue their study of Root Words: man/manu and take an assessment Thursday.

5th grade Project Goal

In Project Goal, Scholars will be learning how to use Draw a Picture Problem Solving Strategy. Scholars will be identifying Cause & Effect through analogies. Scholars will be introduced to the Renaissance and complete a Cards and Castles Activity.

This week Artists in 3rd grade will continue to learn about the Architecture of downtown Blacksburg. Artists in 4th grade will learn about the Value Scale, and 5th graders will learn new techniques in applying the value scale.

Library

Scholars will learn this week how to access ebooks from SC Virtual Library -Tumble Books, PebbleGo, and DK Eyewitness.

  • Please support your child by ensuring that their laptops are charged every day and brought to school each and every day!
  • Please turn in a note if your child is out of school for any reason.
  • Please send a note if there is a change in transportation. This note should include the child's first and last name, the change requested, length of the change, and a parent/guardian signature.
  • Pick-up for the Kids Club is in the back loop. Car riders are picked up in the back loop until 2:45. Please do not pick-up up from Kids Club before 2:45. Parents are required to sign their child out from Kids Club.
