Update on Planning for Opening Schools in Fall 2020

The planning process is well underway for schools to reopen safely in the fall of 2020. Immediately after school let out, we went to work on the daunting task of preparing for the fall reopening. We want to share with you an update on the work happening at the school and district levels.

Teams across the District are digesting the guidance released by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE), which was updated yesterday, and forming the first phase of our plans. We surveyed students, staff, and families to get their feedback on Distance Learning this spring, and earlier this week emailed families a second survey regarding reopening safely next fall. If you have not yet completed the most recent survey, please click here to do so now. You may also submit feedback and questions via email at fall2020feedback@sherwood.k12.or.us. Your input is critical to developing our models for next year. We plan to further engage all stakeholders in the upcoming weeks to continue gathering feedback throughout the planning process.

At the district level, we have two teams assembled -- one is focusing on the operational components of opening (transportation, nutrition, sanitation, etc.) and the other, focusing on the instructional components. In addition, there are separate planning teams for each of our school levels. Each school team is committed to an inclusive process that incorporates the input of all staff members via direct participation in the process, association representation on planning teams, and an ongoing process to reach out to our community, all along the way.

At the school levels, teams consisting of teachers, administrators, counselors, special education staff, classified staff, and others have been formed to work collaboratively on creating school-specific plans for reopening. This work includes a thorough review of all ODE and OHA guidance, as well as researching models being used around the nation to seek possibilities for delivering education to students during the reality of a pandemic. For all of our school teams, their vision is founded on innovation and improved outcomes for all students, especially students who have been historically underserved.

Once each week, all administrators meet for two hours on Wednesday to discuss issues common to all levels, and to make sure our work and thinking are in alignment across all teams. This work will continue throughout the summer, and will be informed by our stakeholder feedback as we continue to engage our families and community. Please stay tuned for opportunities to provide input on our fall planning process.

New Logos and School Names

As you may know, during the 2019-20 school year our district participated in a rebranding process to design a new district logo, as well as to identify names, mascots, logos, and colors for our Transformations schools and refine our high school logo. You have likely already seen our schools begin to use their new logos as we begin to look ahead to the 2020-21 school year. You will also begin to see our new district logo (pictured above) being used going forward.

Another component of our rebranding process is an update to our website to create a more accessible, user-friendly web experience. Our Technology Department continues to work to prepare for the change to our new website, which will go live in early August. We are excited to share our new website with our students and families soon -- please stay tuned!

New School Phone Numbers

Starting today, several of our schools will have new main office phone numbers. Please take note of the following changes:

  • Hawks View Elementary (formerly Hopkins) - 503-825-5400
  • Sherwood Middle School - 503-825-5500
  • Sherwood High School - 503-825-6000

State Testing Results

Each spring, students take the Smarter Balanced Assessment, Oregon Science Assessment, and English Language Proficiency Assessment based on their grade level and participation in the English Learner program. This year, most students did not take the assessments due to the COVID-19 extended school closure. If students completed one or more of these tests this year — as some schools administered some tests before March 13th — their score will be shared with families as in past years.

New Reservation System for District Facilities

The Sherwood School District is pleased to announce the implementation of Facilitron, a new online facility request and rental system for our district facilities. Renters will be able to access photos and descriptions of available spaces, see real-time availability, get estimated quotes, and pay rental fees online.

The new Facilitron system will be live for public facility reservations (buildings and fields) beginning July 15th. The District will continue to follow Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education guidance on opening and operating facilities for public use. You can view and request District facilities at: https://www.facilitron.com/ssd97140.
