March Teacher/Staff Professional Development Focus
During our March Professional Development, Out Maine provided a training on how to build affirming schools for LGBTQ students. Out Maine is the only organization in Maine to focus exclusively on the needs of LGBTQ youth. They provide direct support services to youth and their family’s, youth leadership and peer engagement opportunities, and work with schools, summer camps, medical offices, and other community organizations to increase understanding of how to empower and affirm their LGBTQ youth.
During the training, Out Maine provided “Safe Space” stickers for faculty to put in their classroom. We often see these stickers in various places: counseling offices, doctors offices, schools, but what does it mean to be a “safe space” for LGBTQ youth? With the stickers, Out Maine also provided an agreement. By putting up the safe space sticker, teachers are committing to a number of things to help students feel more comfortable:
Using correct names and pronouns to the best of their ability
Affirming everyone’s gender identity and expression
Intervening on any bullying, harassment, or anti LGBTQ comments
Holding students accountable to group norms
Encouraging and teaching empathy, compassion and respect
Using gender-inclusive terms
As you walk around BHS, you’ll see many teachers with these stickers on their doors, desks, and boards! BHS also has a Pride club that meets weekly during Monday flex. This club provides an opportunity to connect with peers and get inspired to make change in our community! If your student is interested in learning more about Pride club, they can reach out to Ms. McKearney (tmckearney@brunswicksd.org) or Mrs. Poirier (apoirier@brunswicksd.org)!
If you’re a parent/guardian of a student who identifies as LGBTQ, please take a look at Out Maine’s parent and caregiver resources! They have a weekly virtual drop in, blog posts, and a few other cool resources.
If you are concerned about your student, please reach out to their school counselor: Mary Moore (R10, OCLC, ESOL), Diane Cook (A-F), Scott Bradley (G-N), Christina Ring (O-Z). You can also reach out to Meredith Vogel (general education social worker) or Mary Kunhardt (special education social worker).
Outing Club
The final issue of Maine Magazine was released this month, and Brunswick outing club is the star! Kudos to Jess Marion & Andrew McCullough for advising a strong club that has been a model partner for Teens to Trails in their work across the state.
Teens to Trails
Teens to Trails worked in collaboration with Wild Oats to raise money for outdoor clubs last Sunday through their Cupcakes for a Cause program. A group of 9 volunteers from BHS, Morse, and BJHS collectively sold 95 custom designed Campfire Cupcakes, and received many generous donations. In total, they generated $1200 to share with each school that provided volunteers. The volunteers all had a great time and were proud they could give back to the community and their schools. A couple of students even asked what they could help out with in the future.
