This week brings us International Pi Day on Thursday, 3/14. Here are a few interesting tidbits about Pi. The Greek letter Pi was fist used in 1707 but didn't become popular until Leonard Euler used it in 1737. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal. This may be hard to believe but not only is there a Pi Day, there is a Pie Day as well. The American Pie Council recognizes January 23rd as National Pie Day. Every year they encourage Americans to celebrate the day by not only eating pie but by having everything from pie making classes to pie throwing contests. So next year, mark your calendar and be sure to eat a big slice of your favorite pie!!! I am so excited that Pi Day is finally here. On Thursday I have some great things planned to celebrate the day!!! The students have brought in some incredibly, awesome Pi projects. They gave it their everything and boy, have I been impressed. I will be posting them all on the blog later this week. Please take a minute to check them out, I know you are going to be really amazed at what they have done!!!!

As I mentioned in last week's newsletter, there is a famous mathematician whose birthday is on Pi Day. If you have not already guessed, it is Albert Einstein. He was born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. While Einstein is probably best known for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, (which is also called "the world's most famous equation") he has many, many accomplishments which also include winning a Nobel Peace Prize.
