Dear Parents,
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives students a chance to enter scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math problem‐solving skills, and writing skills.
Students who participate in the PSAT/NMSQT are provided with the opportunity to:
- Receive feedback on the skills necessary for college study.
- Compare their assessment performance with that of others applying to college.
- Enter the competition for scholarships from National Merit Scholarship Corporation (11th grade only).
- Prepare and become more familiar with the types of questions that will be seen on the SAT.
- Obtain information from prospective colleges and universities.
In an effort to help our young people achieve their dreams, we are planning to administer the PSAT to our 11th grade Blue and Gold students on Wednesday, October 14th. All of our Blue students have been scheduled to test with their Blue cohort in classrooms that comply with social distancing requirements. The same is true for all of our Gold students.
At the present time, 11th grade students who are in our 100% Remote group will have an opportunity to take the PSAT at our High School on Tuesday, January 26th. The College Board has added this date to the 20-21 SY because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This second date allows high schools to spread students out over two administrations to preserve the health and safety of students, staff, and school communities. Given the pandemic, we will keep you updated on any changes that may come about from the College Board between now and then.
Last year, the State cancelled the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (formerly known as PARCC). However, it is still requiring that 12th grade students demonstrate standardized testing proficiency to the State in order to receive a diploma from a public high school. So, this year, a number of our 12th grade students are also taking the PSAT to show their proficiency to the State. Just as is the case with our 11th grade students, we will be maintaining cohorts and social distancing requirements for
these students.
As a result of all of this, we will be operating a different “B” Day schedule on Wednesday, October 14th. Our 11th grade Blue and Gold students, as well as a number of our 12th grade students, will be coming to school from 7:25 a.m. – 11:55 p.m. to test. All of our other students in grades 9 – 12 will complete virtual “B” Day assignments at home. Afterwards, we will have a Catch Up & Connect period from 12:50 p.m. – 1:50 p.m., so that our students will have an opportunity to connect with our teachers and vice versa.
Our Transportation Department is aware of all of this information. If any changes need to be made to our busing schedules, these changes will be forthcoming.
Thank you, as always, for your support!
Please never hesitate to contact me for any reason.
Sincerely,
John Cogan

Important AP Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Every year, the College Board offers an AP exam for every AP course that a school might offer. The point of each exam is to measure student mastery of the AP curriculum. Students who do well on these AP exams are able to earn college credit for the work that they have done in high school.
Here are two very valuable links that I encourage you to explore to learn more about the benefits of AP testing:
- https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/exploreap
Our school will be administering AP exams on the following dates this year:
AP United States Government & Politics – May 3rd @ 8:00 a.m.
AP Calculus AB – May 4th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP English Literature and Composition – May 5th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP United States History – May 6th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP Chemistry – May 7th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP European History – May 7th @ 12:00 p.m.
AP French Language and Culture – May 10th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP Spanish Language and Culture – May 11th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP English Language and Composition – May 12th @ 8:00 a.m.
AP Microeconomics – May 12th @ 12:00 p.m.
AP Biology – May 14th @ 8:00 a.m.
The cost of each AP exam is $86. Checks and money orders are acceptable forms of payment. We are not permitted to accept cash. Please make your check or money order payable to “Florence Township Memorial High School.” Please drop off or have your children drop off their AP payment to Mrs. Belcher in the Main Office. If your child is in our Free and Reduced Lunch Program, then the College Board and the District will work together to cover the cost of your child’s AP exam(s). Please email Mrs. Belcher at kbelcher@florence.k12.nj.us to register your child for his/her exam in this circumstance.
This year, the College Board is requiring schools to order AP exams in the fall for all full-year and first-semester AP courses. As a result, we will need to know whether or not your child will be participating in AP testing this year by Friday, October 30th. The money needed to order the AP tests will also be due by this date. Our only second-semester AP course is Microeconomics, and we will need to know whether or not your child will be taking that test by Friday, February 26th. The money needed to order the AP Microeconomics test will also be due on February 26th.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the College Board is not going to charge us if we cancel our order for your child, provided we do so at the beginning of March. Although we strongly encourage all of our AP students to take their AP exams, we will be able to refund you for the cost of the exam as long as you cancel your order by Wednesday, March 3rd. In order to cancel an AP exam for your son or daughter, all that you need to do is email our AP Coordinator, Ms. Barbara Fazekas, at bfazekas@florence.k12.nj.us.
Please never hesitate to reach out to me for any reason.
Sincerely,
John Cogan

Academic Achievement Program
This is a wonderful program! We will once again be challenging our students to settle for nothing less than their best. We want to see our students succeed, and we will be communicating to them that we want them to set their sights on earning a GPA of at least a 3.0 (or a “B” average) with no “D” or “F” grades in any course for each marking period of the school year. Please join us in challenging your child to be content with nothing less than his or her best effort!
Students who earned at least a 3.0 (with no “D’s” or “F’s”) will be recognized at the end of the 1st marking period.
Thanks to our GENEROUS Parents Organization, four students – one from each grade level – will be randomly chosen and treated to $25 Wawa gift card!

Computer Science Club
This club will meet once every other week to work on web design, coding, drones, robots, and any other tech we can get our hands-on. We will look at tech issues in the district and try to solve problems that students and teachers are having. The goal here is to not only have a good time but create a club that others can rely on to help with tech issues and make tech more useful for teachers and students.
Cultural Awareness for Everyone Club (CAFE)
Introducing and educating students on cultural diversity. Online resources will be utilized extensively to explore music, culture, and art unique to each culture. Each month a different culture will be highlighted.
Students may run contests to involve the student body and attract new members. Monthly celebrations will explore unique culinary cultural differences.
An emphasis on what we have in common will be a prevailing theme. Other staff members will be invited to share stories of their cultural experiences.
Debate Team
If you like to discuss current issues and win arguments, then you may want to try out for our school’s debate team. Debate involves opposing viewpoints on important public policy issues.
Through debate, students deepen their understanding of public affairs. They also learn to find a hook, formulate an argument, sharpen their speaking and writing skills, and spot and exploit weaknesses in opponents’ arguments.
Our team competes in the South Jersey Debate League beginning in December each year. Participating in debate will help you grow in meaningful ways, as you refine your own skills and mentor new team members, and thus will contribute to your future success in college and beyond.
Environmental Club
The Environmental Club will raise awareness of NJ’s diverse environment. Students will get to attend "virtual" field trips.
Game Club
The Game Club will nostalgically play board game classics like Chess and Parcheesi, but also see activities centered around Boggle and Scrabble for vocabulary reinforcement, Monopoly and The Game of Life for Financial Literacy interactions.
Aside from these games, there are often numerous card/board games being released each year. We also wish to have games on video consoles.
There will be officers established in this student-run club and a Google Classroom where club procedures and expectations will be posted. Elected officials and club committees will set up game assignments and club events.
It will be our goal to create an inclusive club environment that would be competitive, but also respectful, intelligent, fun, and caring. There will be a possibility of tournaments occurring in between bi-weekly meeting days.
Since we are going "virtual" this year for clubs, our games may be modified.
Marching Band
Marching Band is a co-curricular activity that consists of both instrumental music students and guard members. The Marching Band rehearses outside of the school day and is an ensemble that provides spirit and enthusiasm for school and community events.
The Band competes in a marching band circuit as well as performing for football games. The bands’ performances are an artistic balance and blend of intense marching drill, highly visual equipment work, and musical repertoire.
The Marching Band is a highly active disciplined ensemble demanding dedication and responsibility from all its members. The Band, on many occasions, acts as ambassadors for our school and community by performing not only locally, but throughout the tri-state area.
Since we are going "virtual" this year, we are not quite sure what this will look like.
Musical
Open auditions for the school musical will take place in December. Students of all grades and levels of experience are invited to audition at that time. Information will be available closer to December.
Since we are going virtual this year with our clubs, our "Musical" may be very different....
National Honor Society
The members of this Society are selected by a Faculty Council of teachers. Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter must be members of the sophomore or junior class and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 at the time of selection. Students who are eligible academically are notified and then considered for selection based on the high qualities of leadership, service, and character.
Academically eligible students are given an application packet. This packet requires the applicant to discuss their leadership, character, citizenship, and service qualifications. The application packet is individually reviewed by each member of the Faculty Council. Finally, applicants will participate in a group interview with the Faculty Council.
Seven- and one-half hours per marking period of community service (for a minimum total of 30 hours for the year) are required by all inducted members while maintaining the 3.8 GPA and a clean discipline record. NHS members serve the Florence and surrounding communities throughout the year by volunteering for numerous events, charities, clothing, and food drives, etc.
Newspaper
The Newspaper Club will give students the opportunity to experience being a journalist for both school and local events.
Students will learn the basics of writing a story and be able to consider being a photographer for events.
All students are welcome to come to our monthly meetings to learn more and see what events are being covered in the upcoming issue.
Interact Club
The 2020-2021 Interact Officers are:
President: Rajveer Kaur
Vice President: Fabiha Usha
Secretary: Hazal Akkaya
Treasurer: Logan Trayner
Sergeant at Arms: Gusahajpreet Singh
Interact is a service-based club, sponsored by the Bordentown Rotary. Students must participate in a minimum of 20 service hours per year. Projects include volunteering at a local
assisted living facility, assisting various community groups with projects, and helping with collection drives to benefit people in need.
Each student is required to pay $25 in dues, which covers the cost of two shirts to be worn when individuals are participating in club service projects.
Student Council
Student Council
President: Grace Skinner
Vice President: Cassaundra Alicea
Secretary: Finley Charles
Treasurer: Breanna Ojeikere
BOE Rep.: Gabrielle Fleming
Historians: Mya Cabanas-Montero and Michael Dunphy
Executive Members: Maiyah McDuffie and Sarah Olatubosun
The Student Council was formed for the purpose of training a representative group of students who would meet regularly to talk over student-related problems, ideas and suggestions, be a liaison between administration, faculty and student body and be the official representative body of the school.
Working with the Administration and Faculty, the Student Council will suggest improvements, assist in the orientation of new students, and help organize the social events calendar for the high school.
The Student Council attempts to improve the school by giving voice to student ideas. Great responsibility rests with this organization. It is most effective and successful when it has the cooperation and support of the entire student body.
Student Council members include the class officers and homeroom representatives who are elected at the beginning of each school year. Any student who would like to be involved can apply for general membership to assist with projects. Our goal is to have 100% involvement from the student body.
Student Council sponsors various activities throughout the school year. Activities for the fall are: Food drive; toy drive; and the Trunk or Treat. Various collection drives and service projects are also sponsored throughout the year to assist the high school and the Florence Township community.
Yearbook
The members of this club are responsible for the writing and composing, the printing and publishing of the school yearbook.
Members are expected to help with fundraising, especially through ad sales.

Character Education -- October Character Trait is "Respect"
The development of GOOD CHARACTER is not an isolated skill to be taught in one area of a child’s life. It is an effort of home, school, and community to instill in our young people good values. The development of good character touches our personal development, it impacts our success with academic development in learning, and good character is essential in the workforce to be successful in our careers.
Bullying:
Going back to school this year looks a bit different for all students. Some students are attending class in person, some are learning from home and others may be doing both. Bullying prevention is one way to support students so they can get the most out of their education. Educators, teachers, parents and caregivers all play a role in children's learning and in bullying prevention. Read more on StopBullying.gov.
