Help Students Master the Extended Constructed Response on STAAR 2.0
The STAAR 2.0 is around the corner and this year it will include an Extended Constructed Response (ECR). All RLA assessments will include ECR questions which require students to write an essay based on a reading passage. In the past, the composition question was not connected to a reading passage. ECR questions, in 3rd-5th grade, will require students to write a response in one of two modes: informational or argumentative. Even though students will only write in these two modes, all of the reading genres are eligible to be paired with the ECR. This means that students may read any genre (poetry, literary fiction, drama, informational, argumentative, etc.) and respond with an informational or argumentative essay.
Tips for Teaching ECR
Mentor texts: Choose an engaging mentor text to teach reading and writing skills.
Create STAAR-like writing prompts: Based on the mentor text used during reading, create an informational or argumentative prompt. Use the released examples on Cambium to write your own prompts. Check out my freebie below!
Model the writing process: Model composing an ECR utilizing the writing process.
Provide sentence stems: Create anchor charts with writing sentence stems for each writing genre. Check out my freebie!
