from the Bremerton School District
January 2023
Welcome 2023 - We are looking forward to a great year.
The new year is here, we welcome it with open arms as we continue to invite more volunteers into our schools for the betterment of all. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. Thank you for taking the time to volunteer in our schools.
Volunteer spotlight: West Hills STEM Academy Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)
We'd like to give a well-deserved shout out to West Hills STEM Academy (WHSA) Watch D.O.G.S. program - back after a break due to COVID.
Watch D.O.G.S. are adult volunteers who help provide positive male role models for the students and demonstrate by their presence that education is important. They provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security, reduce bullying and provide a greater sense of campus safety allowing students and teachers to focus on learning and instruction.
“We have had many Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers that helped at our school and at our special events. The kids loved seeing their family members on campus and enjoyed playing and learning from our community members.” said Shayla Sharlow, WSHA kindergarten teacher and Top D.O.G. “I am so excited to get this program up and running again! Some of our Watch D.O.G.S. have had lasting impact on our students,” she added.
While we have many great dads involved - Watch D.O.G.S. don't have to be dads! Watch D.O.G.S. can be stepdads, grandfathers, brothers, neighbors or other community members who want to make a difference. Future Watch D.O.G.S. could include YOU!
To learn more about becoming a Watch D.O.G.S. at West Hills STEM Academy, please contact Elizabeth Garrett, WHSA Volunteer Coordinator at Elizabeth.Garrett1@BremertonSchools.org.
Bremerton Secondary PTA volunteers: a happy group ready to welcome you in!
West Hills PTA President Suzie: ever helpful in the school and throughout our community.
Volunteer applications are valid for two years
Volunteers who completed our updated online application process last year are still approved to volunteer this school year. Volunteers approved prior to the last school year will need to go through our new approval process before they can volunteer.
Not sure?
You can ask one of the school's volunteer coordinators to check and see if you are are currently on the approved volunteer list in our Raptor database and the volunteer coordinator will also be able to tell you when your application expires. Raptor is the same system the District uses for checking in visitors at our schools.
The Kindness Project - Everyone Benefits when Kindness is Shared!
More than 2,500 handwritten cards have been distributed to staff and students since the project began in the fall of 2020 when
The Kindness Project was launched.
Volunteers are needed to assist with The Kindness Project! Learn more here!

Bremerton Backpack Brigade
The Bremerton Backpack Brigade is in need of volunteers. This is not a District volunteering opportunity so you do not have to be approved as a District volunteer. We are so appreciative of the tremendous support the Bremerton Backpack Brigade provides to our students and families.
Save the Date
be Bremerton: A Day of Service is a districtwide event to show the Bremerton Community and the City of Bremerton our thanks for their tremendous support of the Bremerton School District and our students. BSD students, staff, families and volunteers will gather at Evergreen Rotary Park on the Saturday before the Armed Forces Day Festival. From there, we break-up into teams to clean up downtown Bremerton before the annual Armed Forces Day parade and celebration!
