What's Happening??!!

Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,

WOW! November is winding up with us heading into December. Our first Marking Period ends this week. We are wrapping up Halloween, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving as we head into Kindness Month and all that December brings.

Buckle up, stay seated, and keep your hands and feet in the car at all times, as you read on to find out What's Happening at Hawley .....

Our Safe School Climate Committee came up with some great activities to help celebrate each other. Over the holiday season, Hawley would like to acknowledge and honor FAMILY, in all of its various shapes and sizes.

Ms. Tischio and Mrs. Carlson read to each grade, The Family Book by Todd Parr. Students then drew their family in the cartoon style of Mr. Parr.

We also want to display and see our families. Please send in any photo that represents your family --a formal picture, a selfie and anything in between. Please send it to your child's teacher in an envelope titled "Family Picture Project" with your child's name and teacher's name on the back by December 8th. Staff is also doing this. Pictures will be displayed throughout the school.

Students have a Special Every Day. They either go to Art, Library, Music, PE or Spanish. Our wonderful Special Area Teachers held a Specials Open House before break. Parents and their children came in and rotated through every Special doing a fun activity.

It was a very fun and informative evening. Thank You Ms. Giddings, Ms Griffin, Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Marak, Mr. Sortino, Mr. Pereira and Ms. LaFontan.

If your child was absent for Picture Day or you did not like the photo, Picture RETAKES are THIS Wednesday, November 29.

THIS Thursday, November 30 is PIZZA Night (day) for Hawley. Order a Pizza or any meal at Project Pizza and a portion of the proceeds go to the Hawley PTA and our school.

Our PTA has also made some wonderful purchases for Hawley School. We are so excited about them all. None of which would be possible without your continued support.

Please make sure your student is properly dressed for the weather. Please do not forget jackets, hats, mittens/gloves and boots when necessary. Please also consider having a change of clothes stored at school for your student. Personal accidents happen as well as spills and falls at recess. The health office only has a limited amount of emergency clothes.

Please consider providing your student with their own chapstick and personal sized lotion in their backpack. Winter months bring about dry skin and lips. These items will help keep your student actively involved in classroom activities.

Chartwells wants you to know something fun is happening in our Cafe. Students will have the opportunity to experience the new program called Mood Boost.

• Attendance Letters: Shortly, per State Law, we will begin mailing Attendance Notifications. You receive a letter after the 6th and 9th absence. Please Note that although being in school is important, I understand vacations and sicknesses and family events. We must mail the letters. If I have a concern over your child's attendances affecting their academics, I will call you to discuss.
• Pick Up Reminders: The end of our day has many moving pieces. Students are in classrooms, at special, receiving intervention/enrichment support, at extra recess, heading to bus lines or bus rooms. We discourage last minute changes or pick ups between 3:10-3:30. If dismissal has begun, you may need to pick up using our regular system. Also, calls are best or emails to the office, not just teacher (grimaldim@newtown.k12.ct.us AND chernoffg@newtown.k12.ct.us).
