Check out these 4 books as you take some time out for YOU! this month:
1. The Earlie King & The Kid In Yellow
By Danny Denton ($17.55, Granta) This book will blow your mind. Written in a hurl of playful poetry and whip-smart prose, Ireland is sinking into flood waters but a reporter is sifting (literally) through a legend to tell the story of city gangster Earlie King, a baby’s disappearance and the elusive Kid in Yellow who once loved King’s daughter. Utterly extraordinary, it’s best you read it. Right now.
2. Kintu
By Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi ($21.98, Oneworld) A sprawling, ambitious tale of a family curse that reverberates over 300 years and countless generations, Kintu is epic in every sense of the word. At 410 pages long and set over five sections, it’s a portrait of a clan, the Buganda kingdom, the origins of modern Uganda and what it means to be human.
3. The Feed
By Nick Clark Windo ($17.70, Headline) Imagine a world where everyone is plugged directly into one social media feed. Chat, news, all communication, until one day it goes down. Six years later, Tom and Kate are trying to keep it together in a society that’s been decimated, living in fear of mind hacks when their daughter disappears. Got chills? This dystopian gulp of a thriller is for you.
4. Trying
By Emily Phillips ($24.13, Hodder & Stoughton) Funny, complex debut which explores that life stage where relationships, work, mind, bodies, friends, family hopes and dreams can give you a right good kicking.

Update on Together We Rise: Thank you Dr. McFadden!
We are sharing a wonderful message that was posted recognizing Dr. Lauren McFadden, who coordinated the Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) Service for this past KDP Holiday Gathering, as well as CEHS/KDP volunteers who contributed to the "Together We Rise" initiative. You have made a positive impact on children and the staff who work with them in our local communities of Maplewood, Orange, South Orange and Newark. Thank you so much!
Fulbright Opportunities
Our thank-you to former KDP E-Board President Daria Pizzuto for sharing the teacher exchange opportunities below (sponsored by the Department of State) with our KDP members!
The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides short-term seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Each seminar features educational lectures and activities specifically designed for the group, including visits to local schools and organizations, meetings with teachers and students, and visits to cultural sites. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new, cross-cultural curricula for their classrooms and school systems back in the U.S.
In 2018, summer programs will be offered in Ecuador, India, and Poland. A total of 48 awards are available (sixteen per program). The program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Teacher participants are responsible for a cost-share of $600.
The 2018 Seminars Abroad application is now available on the G5 website at www.g5.gov.
Deadline is February 28, 2018
