September 2023
Dear MVLA Community,
As we complete the first month of our 2023-2024 school year, it is an honor to share some highlights and updates from our high school community.
One of the cornerstones of our high schools is how student leadership permeates our hallways. Our students consistently demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, commitment to service, and a passion for making a positive impact. Whether through student government, student newspapers, yearbook students, clubs, athletics, music, drama, or volunteer activities, our students exemplify the best of our community.
This newsletter shares examples of student leadership, student recognition, college, and career fair information, and highlights from our district board meetings and partnerships. Within this issue, you will also see our latest, student produced, MVLA Minute, featuring our new Student Services Centers!
With appreciation,
Nellie Meyer
Superintendent
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES
Thirty-one MVLA seniors have advanced to semifinalist standing for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's (NMSC) National Merit Scholarship 2024 competition. The MVLA students are part of a group of approximately 16,000 National Merit Scholarship student semifinalists named this month by the NMSC.
Advancing to the semifinalist stage is a significant accomplishment. Approximately 1.4 million juniors from 21,000 high schools across the country entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) last fall. Mountain View High School's Folklorico Class/Club provided some exceptional performances to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latino and Hispanic communities. Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 began September 15 and continues through October 15. The event commemorates how those communities have influenced and contributed to American society at large.
Folklorico can be traced all the way back to the ceremonial and social dances of indigenous people living in Mexico. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived, they brought their own music and dances with them. Check out these videos from the club's performance - Video-1 | Video-2 | Video-3.
