Even if you haven't entered a project into the Science Fair, please consider joining us tomorrow night for the fun! PTSA will be selling pizza, cotton candy, soda, and snacks that your family can enjoy as they browse the entries and play science-based games. We hope to see you there!

Families are invited to a fun night out hosted by our own Newfane PTSA on March 16, 2023. Doors will open at 5:30, with Bingo calling beginning at 6 PM in the Newfane Elementary cafeteria. The cost of admission is one full-sized candy bar per participant, which will be used as prizes (in addition to some fun surprises!). Popcorn, candy, and light refreshments will be available for purchase.

In honor of Black History Month, our principal Mrs. Hawkins has added a special segment to our Morning Announcements for this month called "Who Am I?". Each Wednesday, students heard a description of a prominent black historical figure and submitted a guess. Winners were chosen at random on Thursday mornings.

To assist in answering these special trivia questions, we encouraged students to utilize the bulletin board created by and outside Mrs. Flynn’s classroom.

Here is a sample clue: “In 1992, I was the first African American women to go to space. I’m also a doctor. Who am I?”

Miss. Maybach taught about random acts of kindness for National Random Acts of Kindness Day! They made friendship bracelets to hand out so they can make new friends! They also made some bracelets for the ladies in the cafeteria!

Our students had a blast on February 1st celebrating Global Day of Play which promotes the importance of unstructured, regular play for children. Here at Newfane Elementary, we believe play is not just for fun but prompts emotional and cognitive development, self-esteem, functional language, social skills and so much more.

In class Mrs. Water's, students wrote about friendship and then shared their favorite stuffed animals with their friends.

Our second graders got geared up for this year's Superbowl by rotating through football inspired stations targeting vocabulary, motor movement, following directions and much more!

Mrs. Dockery’s class had fun learning and celebrating Valentine’s Day!

Mr. Kiser has been pushing into Mrs. Bower’s classroom with the Iculus Quest VR headset to view 360 degree videos of the students exploring various winter activities such as sledding on a dogsled team, skiing, tubbing, ice skating and so much more. After these virtual experiences, the students are completing various writing tasks such as writing adjectives that describe the winter activity, completing graphic organizers and comparing and contrasting. What a fun and interactive way to bring these winter activities to life as well as their writing.

In Mrs. Brown’s science lesson, students investigated which kinds of birds are likely to visit a bird feeder based on what they eat. In the activity, ‘Design a Bird Feeder,” students first drew their own bird feeder design to attract a specific type of bird. Then they built a prototype of their bird feeder using available materials. Check out their hard work!

This year our school adopted a new reading curriculum, Amplify CKLA. We are extremely excited to be able to offer this evidence-based program to our students here at Newfane Elementary. In K-2, students receive reading instruction in 2 blocks: Skills (honing their phonemic awareness, learning their letter/sound correspondences, working on blending, mastering advanced vowel teams and more) and Knowledge (developing their vocabulary through content-rich read alouds and activities). Studies have shown that students need both to become skilled readers! Our 3rd and 4th graders have their reading blocks integrated, including both skills and knowledge in one.

Mrs. Simmons’ 4th graders recently had a dance party in which they created dance moves inspired by the simple machines about which they have been learning. If you look closely, we’re confident you can pick out the wheel and rod, wedge, and screw!

Miss Horning’s third graders started their Viking Quest! They traveled via longboat from Scandinavia to Vineland, modern day Nova Scotia, where they foraged for resources like timber, fish, and berries.

Mrs. Ganshaw’s classroom have been learning about Ancient Civilizations for the past month in their Amplify knowledge Unit! Recently, they brought it all together and took a trip to Egypt with Mr. Kiser and his virtual reality goggles. They had the opportunity to see the remains of ancient Egypt as it looks today. Her students also got to explore the Nile River, Great Pyramid of King Khufu, hieroglyphics, Hapshetsut and much more! The said their biggest surprise was how beautiful the Nile River is.
