Johnson Updates & Reminders
Welcome Back Johnson Families!
I can't believe summer is over and school is starting Friday, August 4!
Our theme this year is "Under Construction." Literally, as you can see from the outside of our building, construction is underway. The new addition is set to be completed summer of 2024. What you can't see is all the renovations that have taken place and will take place inside. During Phase 1 of our renovation, the hallways and classrooms have been painted and new ceiling/lighting and new flooring have been installed from the library to the lunchroom. As of Wednesday, August 2, the last of the tile in the main hallway was being installed. The 2nd-3rd and PreK hallways have been painted. These classrooms will be painted Summer 2024.
We will have renovations happening during the school year. The flooring in the hallways of 2nd/3rd grade and PreK will be demo'ed during Christmas break, but the classrooms will be saved for Summer of 2024. The lunchroom will be repainted, and new ceiling, lighting, and flooring will be completed during Christmas break.
Our K-5 car line will be a little different this year. We are excited about the newly paved car line that will accommodate more cars making for a smoother drop-off and dismissal. Please see the new map and instructions in our newsletter below.
The new addition and renovations have brought new challenges to our day-to-day operations, but the end result will be FANTASTIC for our school and community. Please be patient with us as we grow.
Our staff went "Under Construction" this summer. We have several new faces in our building who are excited to get started. We welcome each of them to our Johnson Family.
Our ELA curriculum is "Under Construction" as well. We have a new English-Language Arts curriculum that is different than the past 10 or more years. We will all learn it this year together.
Thank you for being a part of this construction year with us!!
If you have any questions, concerns, and/or praises, please feel free to share them with me and I'll get those answered or to the right person. I'm looking forward to this year and wish each of you the very best as we start a new year. #BetterTogether
Sincerely,
Mr. Taylor
Stay Updated!
Our District purchased a new communication system that pulls directly from our computer records, so to stay updated, please keep us informed of changes that occur throughout the year.
Open House
Please join us for Open House Thursday, August 3 from 4-7pm. This is a come-and-go event.
While at Open House, you will have the opportunity to meet your child's new teacher, order some Kona Ice, and visit other stations that we have available.
Open House Stations:
- Check out our Parent Resource Room by the library with our parent liaison Mrs. Wendy Yeager. She has 130 backpacks with supplies to give away and free COVID testing kits for all students.
- Nurse's Office is in the front office now for your convenience. Drop off any medications or ask Nurse Karri questions concerning your child's health.
- Counselor/Counselor Clerk - Please see Mrs. Loughary or Mrs. Wells if you need to enroll your child or update information.
- PTO - check out how to get involved, take a picture with our school banner and Kindergarten students have a signing day opportunity!!
- Bus Drivers- Don't know which bus your child rides? Find out by talking with our drivers and get your child's colored bus band to help us get them to the right bus.
- Car Rider Decals - If your child will be a car rider, then stop by to pick up our new car rider decals. You will love them!

New Car Line Map
- If at all possible, have your child sit on the passenger side of the car.
- K-5 parents will enter and exit the car line via Johnson Road.
- Until further notice, we will use one lane only for car line drop off and pick up.
Our bus line and PreK lines will stay the same.
PreK Car Line Reminders
- All parents will use the PreK Car Line to drop off and pick up. Please do not park and walk your child over.
- In the morning, 2 sets of doors will be utilized. If you are parked in car line and the red doors are visible, then use the Red Doors.
- If you are parked from the start of the line to the red doors, use the PreK Dismissal Door where the benches and plants are located.
- In the afternoon, only the PreK Dismissal door will be utilized.
- Once you are in a lane, please do not cross lanes.
- Please pay attention to Deputy Campbell as he dismisses PreK car line.
Learning Curve Ahead
Other changes:
- Spelling tests will not be a list. Students will focus on spelling patterns throughout the week and then take a test on words that have them apply the spelling pattern rather than a list they memorize.
- Writing: This new curriculum has a focus on writing as well. If you can write it, then you can read it.
- Students may struggle with the first two unit assessments but do not get discouraged. We will all persevere together. We will need patience and time to have a desirable outcome.
- Our thinking: Change is a good thing. It's all about perspective. Let's keep an open and patient mind about our new curriculum and its implementation.
- This is new for everyone in the district, so we will learn and grow together. As we say at Johnson, we are all #BetterTogether.
Student Handbook Changes
Attendance Policy Changes
- Students will have 10 days per year that can be excused by a parent note for the following reasons: personal illness, hospitalization/medical appointments, emergency, death in the immediate family, court subpoena, or religious holiday
- If absent, the parent has 3 days to send in an excuse- either parent or doctor's excuse or the absence will be unexcused
- 3 or more unexcused absences within a semester = no participation in school field trips
- E-Learning Days - students who qualify are allowed 6 days per year. One of the qualifications is no unexcused days. E-learning days do not count as absences.
- Students with unexcused absences may make up work for up to 70% credit.
- For every 3 Unexcused Tardies, parents will lose 1 Parent Note.
- 18 or more absences regardless of excused or unexcused is considered Chronic Absenteeism. This results in not being allowed to participate in non-academic school activities like field day.

- 4: Mastery - full achievement
- 3: Proficient - substantial achievement

We are a Title I School. Our status as a Title I School is determined by the percentage of students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Title I Schools are provided federal money based on their rank of the percentage of free/reduced lunches within our school district. This money provides schools with the necessary funds to hire staff to reduce classroom sizes or interventionists who work with students to close achievement gaps. This money also is used to purchase items or programs to help the students become more successful.
Based on last year's free-reduced lunch count, our school will receive about $92,000 which will be used in hiring two reading interventionists and also purchasing materials and other technologies that benefit our students. Last year, in addition to the two reading interventionists, we also hired a math intervention aide and purchased school supplies for all the students.
Remember I said the amount of money we receive is determined by the rank order of schools. Last year, the school just ahead of us received over $25,000 more than Johnson. The school ahead of them received even more. I say this to say that it is highly important for everyone to fill out the lunch forms regardless of whether you think you will qualify or not. We could be missing out on much-needed funds just by a few families choosing to not fill it out.
If you haven't already, please sign up to see if you qualify for free/reduced lunch at https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/PickDistrict. The link is found on our webpage www.johnsonelementary.org and on the District webpage www.lcsk12.org. Choose "Alabama" and then choose "Limestone County BOE" for our school district to start the application.
