Founders Memorial School News: December 7, 2023
From the Principal
Dear FMS Families,
The month of December is flying by! It’s hard to believe that we are just two weeks away from break. Our students are working hard in class and we are continuing to strengthen our school community.
At last week’s schoolwide meeting, our 3rd and 5th grade student council groups shared some of their work this year. Third grade has worked on labeling our trash, recycling and compost containers in the cafeteria, so students know very clearly how to take care of their food waste at lunch. In addition, they spoke to the school community about the importance of good hand hygiene before eating lunch (after recess).
Our 5th grade student council group shared the work they have done to make student lunch meal recommendations to the district. This group administered a survey to all 5th grade students to get feedback about school lunches, and then prepared a presentation that they shared last week with Scott Fay, EWSD Director of Food Service. This team, which has representatives from nearly every 5th grade class, is now tasked with developing a meal idea that may be taste-tested at FMS in the coming months.
We have student leaders in many parts of the building. From morning announcers to recycling collectors, our students are great helpers in our school. Ask your student if they have applied for a student job, or about the student job program!
Lastly, I want to share with our families two special acknowledgements FMS has received in the past few months.
In October, FMS was awarded the “Gold Excellence in Worksite Wellness” Award at the Governor's Excellence in Worksite Wellness Conference. Just this week, we received a special acknowledgement from the Vermont Interim Secretary of Education, Heather Bouchey, for our accomplishments in PBIS, which is the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports framework that we use at FMS. We are proud of our work and how it benefits our amazing students!
Sincerely,
Sara Jablonski
FMS Principal
Library News
The FMS Library has access to a wide range of resources, such as books, databases, and online research tools, that are used to support student learning. Students are learning important research skills this week in their classrooms and the library. They are paying close attention to non-fiction text features and gaining experience with using reliable electronic resources. Ask your students about the topics they have been exploring and researching!
Happy Reading and Information Seeking,
Mrs. Biggs & Mrs. Pike

Community News
Chloe Yoon, one of our third grade students, was invited to the Statehouse in Montpelier to represent Founders at a presentation for the Vermont Division of Fire and Safety. Chloe's artwork was selected as an honorable mention for the Annual Fire Safety Calendar and Poster Contest. Her art will be featured on the September page of next year's calendar. The program is a yearly program that features the artwork of 3rd grade students from around Vermont.
Congratulations Chloe!
