Theater Renaming
Ashland School District
The district has established procedures for considering proposals for dedicating or naming facilities. It is necessarily a rigorous process to ensure that all district facility namesakes represent the values of the school and district.
The facilities naming process allows us to discover many of the ways in which the namesake has been a role model to students and the community. The committee will look for both pros and cons so that we will have a thorough understanding of the namesake's interactions with individuals and groups.
We will need to form a committee to research the life of the namesake. The committee members will look for any available information in the public sphere from sources such as newspaper articles and stories on the internet. They will also speak with people who know the namesake to gather additional information. Once the research phase is complete, the committee will compare the life values of the namesake to the values of the school and district to ensure that they are aligned. The committee will consider the namesake's previous words, actions, and impact on the community to determine the degree to which the candidate is a good fit with the school and district's vision, mission, and goals. The district is actively working to create a school culture that is welcoming to all students so successful candidates will need to model an inclusive attitude.
We will have a period of community input and we hope to present the recommendation to the School Board at the June meeting. The Board will make the final decision.
There are two ways to participate in this effort (details and links in the sections below):
1. Apply to join the Theater Renaming Committee to help evaluate this name change proposal by April 22nd, 2022.
2. Let us know whether you would support the Theater being renamed after Mr. Hay and why by April 29th, 2022.
Thank you for your continued engagement as we take action to make progress toward our goals.
Sincerely,
Samuel
