The IMS Connection
Volume 17, Issue 2: October 2020
Meet the Teacher will be a weeklong event!
Starting on October 13th - October 19th.
Teachers will post prerecorded videos on their MS Teams page for each of their classes.
Parents will have the week to log into their child's Team pages to view each video.
This will also give parents a opportunity to see what their child is working on.
We are excited in Islip Middle School about beginning our second month of this school year. If we think back just a few short weeks ago, we were wondering if we would even be here, in our school.
Though we are not all here together, we welcome the opportunity that we are even here at all and look forward to being together in the near future. Until then, I can't thank our teaching and learning community enough for all of the support during these trying times.
I am aware this is not ideal, and we have had a few challenges along the way. Please know, if there is something you would like us to address, please reach out to me or Mr. Cohen, your child's teachers or school counselor for assistance. Wishing you a happy and healthy October.
Remember, between October 13 & 19 to log onto your child's "teams" account under assignments and view his or her teachers meet the teacher video.
As always, feel free to contact me at tmartin@islipufsd.org.

We said we were going to make lemonade out of lemons this year, and we are doing just that. The 2020-21 school year is off to a great start. There have been some hiccups along the way as we all adjust to the current situation, but we continue to persevere and look favorably on the strong connections between the school community and the families of IMS.
Our “Meet the Teacher Night” will be a weeklong event. Parents will have a week to sign into each class on their child’s Teams pages and view a video prepared by the teacher. Dr. Martin and I created a video of our own and it is viewable above.
Beginning on October 5th, Islip Public Schools will be making a change to some of its attendance procedures for students in grades 6-12. Students who are fully remote or in the hybrid model working from home will need to self-report their attendance. Students will need to access their student portal account and check into each period throughout the day. Students will also need to connect with that teacher during the scheduled class time in the manner specified by the teacher.
Dr. Martin and I encourage students to be involved in their school both in and out of the classroom. To foster this, IMS continues to offer many opportunities for students to be involved. As such, clubs will begin in early October. With many clubs offered at IMS, and our desire to give students the opportunity to be involved, clubs will run every week but on different days to allow students from both the gold and purple cohorts access.
Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to catch photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our eBoard has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail jcohen@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.
Regards,
Jason P. Cohen

ADVISORY THEME OF THE MONTH
October: Decision Making
The decisions we make define who we are, and each day Middle School students are faced with challenging decisions. This month we’ll be working with students on the decision-making process, whether it’s online, on social media, in the halls, or off campus. Please join us in discussing with your child how to make responsible and healthy choices.
