~ APRIL MESSAGE FROM YOUR EAST HIGH PRINCIPAL ~
April Greetings,
Spring is assessment season; ACT, Open Response, District Common Assessments, BME Math tests, and Iowa Statewide Assessments of Student Progress (ISASP) are happening in April. All of these are important and influence your future, whether it’s for your grade point average (GPA), to pass a class, to determine scholarships, to be able to take college courses, or for college acceptance. I know it is a very busy month, along with all the activities going on, but you can do this!
The Conditions of Learning Survey that all students must take is used for the Iowa Schools Performance Report for the Department of Education. It is part of the data used to rank Iowa schools. The survey has 41 questions about the current school year and has three sections: 1) You at school and expectations, 2) Things that happened to you in the last 30 days, 3) Adult and student interactions this school year.
The Iowa Schools Performance Report also uses data from the Iowa Statewide Assessments of Student Progress that students take in April during their English, Math, and tenth grade Science classes.
There are six levels of rating: 1) Exceptional, 2) High Performing, 3) Commendable, 4) Acceptable, 5) Needs Improvement or 6) Priority/Comprehensive. East High School was rated as Acceptable last year; however, I believe our students and staff are more than just acceptable. Please take the time to do your best on the Iowa Statewide Assessments of Student Progress and answer the questions on the Conditions of Learning Survey seriously.
Sincerely,
Richard O. Todd

EHS Staff Member of the Month
East High School Staff Member of the Month for March: Mr. Hamman.
From the staff that nominated Mr. Hamman. Mr. Hamman may talk a lot, but he does always have the best interest of students in mind. He tries to calm student situations, he speaks to students with respect, and he always tries to give them hope. If there is any success story in this world, Mr. Hamman is one of them.
Mr. Hamman is full of jokes, but he’s serious when it comes to caring about students and staff. He is always on the go checking on his students and reminding them they can be successful if they put in the time. He doesn’t boast about the ways he helps others. He shares his personal history and because of that he shows students they can make something of themselves no matter where they start in life.
Thank you Mr. Hamman for your work here at East High.

Quiz Bowl Team Competes
The EHS Quiz Bowl teams recently had a successful competition at Lawton-Bronson.
Our Varsity team finished the day 7-1 and placed third out of 20 teams. They lost on a criteria point, otherwise they would have been in the championship. Mr. Larson was informed that their “highlight” was defeating SC Heelan 470-205. They also beat the eventual champion, 390-260.
Our Junior varsity team finished 5-3 on the day with a 5th place showing out of 16 teams. Because of conflicts in schedules, the JVplayed with just two members. They really played well.
This years members are: Ben Geary, Ishmael Taylor, Aden Rose, Aubrey Koch, Medhane Negasi, Faith Tenhulzen, Gaby Romo, Brayden Stafford, and Caleb Johnson.

A/B DAYS BELL SCHEDULES
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance. We need your assistance to reduce absenteeism and help your student reach their highest potential. If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, please let us know. We want to partner with you to build a habit of regular attendance and help your child succeed.
Please call our attendance office at 712.274.4000 to excuse your student for any absences, late arrivals or early dismissals.
District Climate Survey Is Coming
All Iowa public school districts are required to administer an annual school climate and culture survey to students in grades 3-12 called Conditions for Learning Survey (Survey). The survey is designed to measure their engagement in school, safety, and the overall learning environment.
From April 1-29, parents and families of students in preschool through grade 12 will also have the opportunity to participate in the Parent Conditions for Learning Survey. The survey contains similar items to those on the student survey, focusing on areas that range from student safety and positive adult and student relationships to school rules and how they are enforced. The parent survey will be accessible to parents or families online from April 1-29. Participation in the survey is encouraged, but it is completely voluntary, and all questions are optional to answer.
Please watch your email on April 1 for more important information regarding this survey, including opt-out information if you do not wish for your student to participate and a link to the parent survey.
