The Southeast Region Career and Technology Center Award of Excellence is public recognition of one student each month for academic excellence, outstanding service, a positive work ethic, and achievements that are above and beyond the call of duty, all the context of the learning environment associated with Career and Technical Education opportunities.

The Southeast Region Career and Technology Center Board, staff, and administration are all partners in recognizing the “Best of the Best” among our student body through the Award of Excellence.

The criteria for selection shall include but not be limited to the following: academic achievement, leadership, work habits, volunteers, citizenship, involvement, youth group participation, reliability, trustworthiness, and maturity.

Any student enrolled in a Southeast Region Career and Technology Center class is eligible for consideration and nomination by their instructor or instructors. This award is not grade point or grade level sensitive.

Nominations will be made by the faculty each month and approved by the Southeast Region Career and Technology Center Board of Education.

I have some exciting news from the middle school science classroom from this past month. The 7th grade life science class was once again invited to attend the annual Eco-Ed Day. This event is held, sponsored and ran by several local, state, and even federal agencies such as the Wild Rice Soil Conservation District and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. At the event, 7th grade students from Sargent Central, North Sargent, and Milnor took part in presentations on wildlife, water quality, forestry, soils, and range land. Other than the weather being fairly uncooperative, it was a fun filled day of exploration and learning about our environment.

The Spanish Two class started making pinatas this month. They learned that pinatas are used in birthday celebrations as well as during Christmas celebrations in Mexico. They also viewed a video explaining how traditional pinatas are made in Mexico. Students are: Chayse Bopp, Neveah Keller, and Patience Greenwood.

Students participated in an experiment that demonstrated the factors required to change from one state of matter to another.

On September 18th, Jared Sundby, a representative of the Army National Guard, visited the junior class to talk about the ASVAB test and fielded questions about military career options. He also visited the Senior Personal Finance class to talk about budgeting. He went through typical expenses for adults.

After considering student requests, a second salad bar has been added to the lunch room. Yay vegetables!

Students created characters, wrote the script, and built the scenery for short plays in Theatre Arts.

On September 17th, students from Environmental Science, Biology, and 7th and 8th grade Science, attended Forman's Arbor Day Celebration. A $10,000 grant was received from NDSU to plant 36 trees around the area. A couple different tree varieties were planted, such as the crab apple.

This month Mr. Wasvick's World History class used the clay leftover from last year’s Artist in Residence program to write their names in Cuneiform on tablets. Cuneiform is the oldest known writing system in the world and was primarily used in the Mesopotamia region, which is present day Iraq.

Students utilize the Wellness Center during Lifetime Wellness Class.

Juniors and seniors attended the college fair at Oakes High School on September 17th. Some of the colleges present were NDSU, UND, NDSCS, and DSU. Students were able to ask questions and find out information about post-secondary education opportunities.

On Tuesday, September 24th, students grades 7th-12th were given information about the harmful effects of vaping.

October 15th - students will be able to have one ND college application fee waived on this day at school. We will be applying from 11 am-noon as a class. If a student is absent that day they cannot do another day as it is a state program.
