Sunset Ridge Weekly Update

We are fast approaching the end of a very different school year and I'd like to take the time to thank everyone for all your support. Teachers have completely changed how they delivered instruction, children learned new ways to connect and engage in their learning, and parents and families have been connected to learning and supporting their children than at any other time in history. The great news is that we made it and I truly believe that we are stronger and more connected because everyone stepped in and worked together. Thank you! We know it was hard.

Looking to the start of the 21-22 school year, we are planning a full return to in-person learning. The state guidelines for distance learning are ending this month. We are excited and look forward to having kids back at school full time.

Nos acercamos rápidamente al final de un año escolar muy diferente y me gustaría tomarme el tiempo para agradecer a todos por todo su apoyo. Los maestros han cambiado por completo la forma en que impartían la instrucción, los niños aprendieron nuevas formas de conectarse y participar en su aprendizaje, y los padres y las familias han estado más conectados con el aprendizaje y el apoyo a sus hijos que en cualquier otro momento de la historia. La buena noticia es que lo logramos y realmente creo que somos más fuertes y estamos más conectados porque todos intervinieron y trabajaron juntos. ¡Gracias! Sabemos que fue difícil.

We would like to celebrate our two Elna Flynn winners of the 20-21 school year. Our two phenomenal winners are Amy Cole Farrell and Janeen Castaneda. Amy Cole Farrell has been our PTO President for the last several years and before that she stepped up to volunteer on the PTO organizing events and activities for the entire school. She added special touches to each event. She was a huge advocate for diversity and helped us celebrate our unique community.

Janeen Castaneda is not only our School Secretary, she is a parent and has volunteered at countless school events dating back to when her oldest son was in Kindergarten. Janeen has held every board position over her time at Sunset Ridge. She also adds that little extra to each activity she helps out with. She is an active PTO parent, volunteered to do the yearbook and has supported each event and meeting that we have held and she does it with a smile.

It is a pleasure to award these two fantastic women the Elna Flynn Award for outstanding volunteerism. From the bottom of my heart I thank both of you for dedication and love you show to our kids, families, and community.

The San Mateo County Libraries will be offering their annual Summer Learning Challenge from June 1 to August 31. Free age-appropriate books will be distributed to all Sunset Ridge students. Every student with a San Mateo County library card will be automatically entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $1,000 college scholarship, so please make sure that your child has a library card.

(If your child needs a library card, or if you have any questions, please call the SMCL Customer Care line at 1-833-YES-SMCL).

Las bibliotecas del condado de San Mateo ofrecerán su Desafío de aprendizaje de verano anual del 1 de junio al 31 de agosto. Our 5th graders will be promoted on June 9th to official middle school students. We are so impressed with their amazing spirit and perseverance. We know that they will have a bright future. We will miss you with all of our hearts. But we are excited to see how you go out into the world and make it a better place for everyone.

The promotion ceremony will be a drive through event for family members in one car. Each child should have received a dashboard card for the family car or if you are in Ms. Lyttle or Ms. Kirejczyk's you can pick one up at the office any day between 8 and 3 pm.

Ms. Mercado and Ms. Pratt's class will begin at 8:30, Ms. King's class will begin at 9am, Ms. Freedman's class will begin at 10, Ms. Lyttle's class will begin at 11 and Ms. Kirejczyk's class will begin at 12 pm. You will drive through the back of the campus and the students will have the opportunity to get their picture taken. Then the teacher will say a few words and everyone from the class will leave.

Please make sure to have the dashboard card visible. You will need it to enter the campus.

Nuestros estudiantes de quinto grado serán promovidos el 9 de junio a estudiantes oficiales de secundaria. Estamos muy impresionados con su increíble espíritu y perseverancia. On June 11th at 1:30pm we will be celebrating the end of the school year with a car parade! Please stand along the parade route (see map). Make signs to cheer on summer!

This award is given to students who have shown outstanding participation in their virtual classes. They show up consistently, engage in conversations and activities in a positive way, and complete assignments. Children can only be nominated for this award by their classroom teacher. Winners are given a certificate and a lollipop that is personally delivered to their home.
