The German-Jewish family that built Macy's into an iconic retailer also left an indelible legacy in American politics and society. From Isidor Straus' philanthropic work with The Educational Alliance, to his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, to his death, arm in arm with his wife of 41 years, in the Titanic disaster, his story begs to be told. Join us on April 15th for an evening celebrating the Straus Family, their many accomplishments, and commemorating their tragic death aboard Titanic.
In his lecture, department store historian Michael Lisicky will discuss how Isidor Straus and his brother Nathan built the Macy's empire. The death of Isidor and his wife Ida on the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912 was a major blow. Her sacrifice, to die in the arms of her husband rather than be saved, inspired the world. The Straus Historical Society has prepared a pop-up exhibition of items related to the Titanic, to Macy's and to the Strauses accomplishments. After the lecture, LBI Executive Director Billy Weitzer will moderate a discussion between Lisicky and Paul Kurzman, former chairman of the Straus Historical Society and a great-grandson of Isidor Straus.
The pop-up exhibition will open at 5:00 PM
Lecture and panel discussion will begin at 6:30 PM
