States of Matter Experiment
Third grade has been learning about the Three States of Matter. We learned the vocabulary, identified examples of each, and learned how the particles move in each state. We concluded our unit by making Root Beer Floats! Vanilla Ice Cream=Solid, Root Beer=Liquid, and the Foam=Gas. We had a BLAST!
Administration Spotlight: Dr. Snodgrass by Nick Burri
Dr. Snodgrass, Director of Greenwood, has been a crucial part of our school for many years. Dr. Snodgrass took over the title of Director of Greenwood from Dr. Janice Duncan, with whom Dr. Snodgrass served as Assistant Director. He is a Springfield native, growing up and living here his entire life and graduated from Hillcrest High School. His family is passionate about education: his father was a principal, his mother an elementary teacher, and his older brother and sister were teachers and coaches. His wife is also a retired teacher. Dr. Snodgrass attended Missouri State University, where he earned his Bachelors, Masters, Specialist degree; his Doctorate degree is from the University of Missouri. He has worked at several school in the Springfield Public Schools district including Hillcrest, Pleasant View, and before Greenwood, he was the principal at Central High School. He has been an administrative leader and mentor for several in the Springfield Public Schools district.
His goals at Greenwood have been to increase communication and has added the website, app, and reinstated the weekly newsletter. He encourages professional development with his staff and enjoys working with the Greenwood faculty. He uses his education experience to lead Greenwood and so far, has done an excellent job. Enrollment is higher than it has ever been, he has added two sports in baseball and volleyball, and oversaw the addition of the Betty and Bobby Allison Event Center. He loves Greenwood and has a passion for education. He also has a grandson here! Zayden Snodgrass is a sixth grader at Greenwood. Dr. Snodgrass’s daughter is also one of our nurses in the building.
In addition to his job at Greenwood, Dr. Snodgrass is a long-time referee in both basketball and football at the high school level. In high school, he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Because Dr. Snodgrass wanted to stay close to the sports he loved, he decided referring would accomplish that goal. He started right out of high school and has not looked back! He has refereed the third most Blue & Gold basketball games in the history of the tournament. At the collegiate level, Dr. Snodgrass is now a Big 10 football referee, traveling every weekend during the college football season to officiate some of the biggest games of the year, including this year’s Orange Bowl. Dr. Snodgrass says he “enjoys the big stage and tremendous atmosphere” of college football. He also leads and mentors’ officials locally and nationwide in professional development. He is being inducted this weekend into the Southwest Missouri Basketball Officials Association’s Hall of Fame. We are happy he is leading our school! Keep your eyes peeled for Greenwood Director, Ron Snodgrass, running around in black and white stripes on Saturdays in the fall!
Administration Spotlight: Jeni Hopkins by Caroline Dugal
Mrs. Jeni Hopkins is the woman behind all of the madness at Greenwood, and we are lucky to have her serve as the Assistant Director alongside Director Dr. Ronald Snodgrass.
They have both been at Greenwood for several years, and now they are partners serving as Director and Assistant Director of Greenwood. When asked what her goals are for the school year, Mrs. Hopkins said they will focus on the four “C’s”: “solid communication, impactful collaboration, increased cultural competence, and positive climate.” She is proud to be a part of the Greenwood family: alum, parent, second-round faculty member, and now Assistant Director. She cannot get enough of Greenwood and loves coming to work every day.
Mrs. Jeni Hopkins lives and breathes Greenwood and has been a member of the Greenwood family since the fifth grade and graduated with the Class of 1990. Mrs. Hopkins was involved as a student: Homecoming queen candidate earned seventeen school basketball records and held two track records! After graduating, she went to play basketball for two years at Pittsburg State and later found her way back to Missouri State to play handball and was a three-time All-American and three-time national double champion.
She coached a Greenwood for eight years, six as head coach, winning three district championships and a State Runner-up finish in 1997, along with the State Sportsmanship Award. She also coached and was a teacher and counselor at Hillcrest for 16 years as the girls’ basketball coach and in 24 years had 20 players go on to play in college, five district championships, a final four appearance, and in 2014 was named the National High School Basketball Coaches Association Missouri Coach of the Year and in 2022 was the first high school coach to be awarded the John Wooden Legacy Award.
She obtained two degrees: one in electronic media with an emphasis on radio and television and one in science education. She also earned a Master’s degree in counseling and is working on a doctorate in performance psychology. Before serving as the Assistant Director, she was a beloved counselor. She had three influences when asked what made her want to pursue counseling. One was her father (Dr. Tommy Burnett), who was a huge inspiration in her life and had a doctorate in sports psychology. Her mother (JoBelle Hopper) was her second influence because, growing up, she taught her to be investigative of people and to know when they needed help. Her third influence was the long-time Greenwood football coach, Paul Mullins. He was a counselor and a coach and inspired her to go into education.
In addition to her work as Greenwood’s Assistant Director, she has a weekly sports talk radio show on Wednesdays on 96.9 The Jock, “A Coach’s Perspective,” where she interviews various coaches and athletes and applies her counseling degree and coaching background. Mrs. Hopkins is a woman of many talents, but as far as this year goes, she is most excited to have the highest enrollment, rockstar staff, and tremendous students. She cannot wait to see what is in store for this year!

Faculty Spotlight – Ms. Ronda Cox by Reagan Winegar
The friendly face often seen in the front office is none other than Ms. Ronda Cox. Ms. Cox attended Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, and Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City for her collegiate degrees. Before taking her current position at Greenwood, Ms. Cox worked at Longs Drug Stores in Walnut Creek and Antioch, California, and Fantastic Caverns when she first moved to Missouri. She initially took her front office position when her son, Joshua, was about to start Kindergarten and she “decided she needed a ‘grown up’ job that had weekends and holidays off.” Although she very much enjoyed her time at Fantastic Caverns, Ms. Cox has “really enjoyed the friends I have made with parents – some since we had students together in kindergarten.” She loves the students and the way they “help people going through challenges and being aware of people’s needs.” On her day off Ms. Cox can be found attending shows at the Little Theatre and eating chocolate, something that she feels she could not live without. She also wants to share that, for those who may not know, her son Joshua was at Greenwood from kindergarten through graduation and that it was a great experience for both of them. Next time you stop by the office make sure to say good morning to the wonderful Ms. Ronda Cox.

Earthquake Relief and Benzer Family
One of our Greenwood family members has been tragically impacted by the earthquake in Turkey. Fatih Benzer has lost numerous cousins, including teens and young children in the earthquake. Others that did survive are now homeless and working to relocate. Many have asked if there is anything that Greenwood family can do to help. We’ve spoken with Didem and she has provided two options for support. There is a very reputable organization in Turkey. Donating through this link will help all people affected by the earthquake. https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey
The second option is to send money directly to Fatih’s brother to support the ones who have been relocated. Jennifer Agnew will collect donations and pass them on to Fatih and Didem to send via Western Union. Jennifer can accept payments via Venmo @Jennifer-Agnew-7. Her phone number is 417-844-4808. We want to send this quickly to have the biggest impact. If you do not Venmo, contact Jennifer for another form of payment.
From Our Secondary Counselor
The spring semester brings into focus a few things for our secondary students that Mrs. Ewing will spotlight in the upcoming newsletters. These topics include next year scheduling, summer enrichment/leadership programs, and scholarship opportunities for seniors.
NEXT YEAR SCHEDULING: Mrs. Ewing presented next year scheduling information to grades 6-11 this week. Students received direction and information for selecting their courses for the 2023-2024 school year. Grade-level Selection of Studies forms were distributed for students to take home and discuss with parents. Selection of Studies should be reviewed, approved, signed by parents, and returned to Mrs. Ewing by March 1. Watch for next year scheduling updates in future newsletters as we progress in the master scheduling process. Dr. Snodgrass recorded the zoom presentation that was provided for parents Wednesday evening.
