4th/5th Teacher's Corner
Both 4th & 5th grades got to do some creative writing this month! The task was to write realistic fiction.
Fourth graders wrote about a character who was nervous about something. Fifth graders had to use a setting that included a location that interested them. Students planned their writing using graphic organizers and then telling their story aloud. First they recorded the story to share with their teacher, and then they told their story in their live ELA session. After getting feedback, on their plan, students typed their stories. Most of the stories were multiple pages!
Although story writing is fun, there are a lot of elements to consider. Students had to add sensory details that would help immerse the reader in the story. They had to incorporate realistic dialogue and punctuate it correctly! Additionally, they had to check spelling, punctuation, and grammar for the entire story. This was one of their favorite ELA projects this year, and it has been fun to hear their creative ideas!
Return to in-person hybrid learning
The district has announced plans to return to in-person hybrid learning in March, beginning with Elementary schools.
The goal is to begin with Kindergarten on March 8, 2021 (subject to change due to vaccine availability for staff):
- Week of March 8: Kindergarten
- Week of March 15: 1st Grade
- Week of March 29: 2nd and 3rd Grade
- Week of April 5: 4th and 5th Grade
Students have the option of remaining in distance learning for the remainder of the school year. Your student may not keep the same teacher, whether choosing distance learning or hybrid learning.
Reflecting on the experience of distance learning, we have changed the plan for Elementary schools in order to see our students more days in person. We will have one cohort in the morning Monday through Thursday, and one cohort in the afternoon Monday through Thursday. This allows each child to be seen in person daily for a little over 2 hours per day. To maintain social distancing required by the Oregon Department of Education, we cannot have all students at one time.
Middle School and High School will begin in-person hybrid learning on April 19, and will remain on the original two day per week schedule. Be watching for surveys from your school to let us know if you will be choosing in-person hybrid learning or distance learning.
