4th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
I hope you enjoyed the topics for this last week as much as I did. We often don’t think about where all our electricity comes from or where it goes, but the reading and video from this lesson certainly gave us some food for thought. These are problems that will need solutions in the coming decades. In the next two weeks leading up to our winter break, we will begin looking at the Sun, Earth, and Moon.
Looking Ahead –
We are moving into a unit that is usually a student favorite – outer space and celestial bodies. Even though many may explore far beyond the Sun, Earth, and Moon on their own, we will be starting with the basics of night and day, seasons, and the phases of the Moon. We will make some time for discussion of broader topics of astronomy as we establish this foundation of understanding our place in the solar system.
Science of Space for the Week: Since we are studying the moon as our only natural satellite, compare the gravity on the moon to that of Earth. At only 16.5% of the Earth’s gravity, a 100 lb. human would weigh less than 17 lbs. on the moon. What would you weigh on the Moon? Check out this website to find more interesting facts about our moon.
