Glenbard West Community -
Hard to believe, but we are now in the eighth week of the first semester. Throughout the Glenbard West campus, it is typical to see students engaged and challenging themselves inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, we have noticed a high percentage of involvement with extra-curriculars, be they our athletic teams or our clubs. Students at West are striving to achieve at the highest level. Furthermore, we are proud of our teachers, counselors, deans, and related service personnel who are there to provide additional support when needed. Should your student be struggling, please check out THIS document that captures the various academic and SEL supports throughout the building.
With Parent/Teacher Conferences on the horizon, I encourage all families to check in with their students to make sure that they are getting the most out of their courses. As you know, Powerschool and Schoology make it easy for parents to monitor their child’s progress and investigate what is happening in each class. Our ultimate goal is to empower our students to be self-sufficient, however, there may be times when they need our help and guidance.
Hopefully, our families have had an opportunity to connect with some of our top-notch presenters through the district-sponsored Glenbard Parent Series. On October 13th, GPS will host an outstanding speaker, Dr. Madeline Levine. Using the latest developments in science and research, GPS speaker Dr. Levine identifies the skills that children need to succeed with today’s challenges. These skills include adaptability, curiosity, collaboration, tolerance for failure, and optimism. Most importantly, Dr. Levine offers day-to-day solutions that parents can use to facilitate these skills, and raise kids who are prepared, healthy, enthusiastic, and happy – ready to face tomorrow with confidence and optimism. Check out all of the GPS offerings HERE.
Finally, I would like to thank all of our parents and guardians who continue to support the efforts of Glenbard West and our students. Our success relies on your support! We are looking forward to the upcoming months and continued opportunities for all of our students.
Go West!

HISTORY OF GLENBARD WEST
Decade Fun Facts about Glenbard West
Hello Hilltoppers,
In last month's newsletter, we focused on the 1920's. That's when the school cornerstone was placed, October 1922, and that is when students began to attend their new high school on Honeysuckle Hill. The 1930's were a departure from the 1920's in that money was tight following the Crash of 1929. Still, families moved into Glen Ellyn and Lombard and students began filling the new high school. One way the tight financial times hit Glenbard High School was in the form of preserved information. For instance, while the school newspaper was still printed and distributed, the 1930's did not produce one yearbook. Because of this, we have almost no pictures of Glenbard students, teachers, clubs, dances, or activities--with the exception of class pictures. I've included a sample class picture so you can see how the students dressed. When you look at the class, take special notice of the girls in the picture. All of them are wearing skirts or dresses. That was the dress code for all females--students and faculty--until the late 1960's or early 1970's. In fact, it was English teacher Virginia Gannon who is credited as the first female teacher to wear a pantsuit to school. In 1934, a yearbook was created, but it was small and its pages were simply stapled together. The photo, shown, of "Glenbard's Brain Trust" gives you an idea of what it looked like. Another yearbook was attempted in 1939, but the cost was considered too high to sell to the students. At last, in 1940, the first yearbook, The Pinnacle, was published.
Also, the auditorium addition was built in 1930-1931. Finally, the photo of some 1936 classmates at the beach was a recent find. The daughter of the student wearing pants (2nd row, extreme right) shared it in a random, September Facebook post.

They are scheduled for September 9, September 29, October 6 and October 27. Counselors have started sending transcripts to your colleges and are in the process of writing letters of recommendation. In order for your counselor to send an official transcript to a college, students must follow the steps in Naviance to add your colleges to your “Colleges I’m Applying To” and request an “Initial Transcript” at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. Senior students who need additional support working on their college applications or have specific questions regarding the college process should make an individual appointment with their School Counselor.
Juniors: School Counselors have developed a database of important college planning resources below for your reference. In addition, add College Night, November 15, to your calendar. In the meantime make sure you are keeping up your grades, preparing for the April SAT and researching colleges by utilizing Naviance to attend college rep visits and explore college requirements.

(NOTE: Due to GW Auditorium renovations, performances will be held at the Glenbard East little theatre.)
Alice journeys into a world of talking animals, comic royalty and races where the contestants run in circles! The finale has Alice watching a trial, but she suddenly finds herself the accused! The play provides a modern view to Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, where nonsense makes quite good sense.
Black Box Comedy: The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase, October 20-22, 7:00 p.m.
(Limited seating, tickets sold at the door.)
When Uncle George invites his family for a weekend of fun to his rustic cabin, he actually wants them together so he can read his will. When his relatives learn that somewhere on the property is a suitcase holding $480,000, they wrestle each other, fall down stairs, and get stuck in furniture. But George's gift is more important than money, teaching that even broken families can reunite and find peace.
ATTENTION SENIORS AND PARENTS
How Does Your Students' Name Appear on the Diploma?
Action May Be Required

If the name should contain special characters, such as a hyphen or is not accepted by the system with proper spacing, you must contact the school Registrar in writing prior to Friday, November 4, 2022.
Questions concerning this matter may be directed to Ms. Peggy Mirka at (630) 942-7484 or email @peggy_mirka@ glenbard.org.
SEMESTER GRADUATION MEETING
Students who have notified their counselor and will complete all graduation requirements by the end of first semester are invited to attend the Early Grad Meeting on November 17th during 2nd period.
Early grads will have the opportunity to learn about the logistics of finishing mid-year, including participating in the annual graduation ceremony held in May. A representative from the Admissions Office at the College of DuPage will also be on hand to answer questions and assist students interested in transitioning to the College of DuPage for the second semester. This meeting is mandatory for early graduates.
Invitations will be sent to students via the School Counseling office prior to the 17th. Contact Mr. Tad Keely in the School Counseling Office at tad_keely@glenbard.org with any questions about this event.
DR. DAVID LARSON, SUPERINTENDENT
Superintendent celebrates 50 years of Title IX
In 1971, before the landmark Title IX legislation was enacted, a look inside Glenbard West’s yearbook shows two girls competitive sports. Today, Glenbard West provides 16 sports for female students and multiple levels of these sports.
Title IX is the federal law passed in 1972 that protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. We join others across the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of this important legislation.
Let’s take a closer look at the impact of equitable access for all students:
● Research shows that students who are engaged in sports and activities do better in school. They also have better options after high school.
● Several of our Profile of a Graduate competencies align with the importance of extracurriculars:
- Students embrace diversity and create community through mutual respect.
- Our students collaborate. They inspire and motivate others toward a common purpose.
- Students are self-empowered. They advocate for themselves and others in a socially responsible, empathetic manner
- Students are advocating for themselves. They are developing skills and using them outside the classroom.
● Students’ participation in athletics and activities is a priority in D87. We have a Board of Education goal for engaging all students in opportunities outside the classroom that reflect the interests of students from diverse backgrounds.
- The 2026-27 goal is for 80% of the district-wide student population to be engaged in a sport or activity. In 2021-22, total participation in extracurriculars was 69% district wide. We continue working to increase student participation in clubs, activities and athletics.
- If students want to create a new school club or activity or introduce a new sport, we work hard to meet that need.
● While many people think of Title IX as a sports law, it is an educational law. Our work focuses on academics, as well as participation in athletics and activities. For example, we have a Board of Education goal related to the number of juniors who are enrolled in Physics and Algebra 2 with Trigonometry. In 2021-22, 80 percent of our juniors were enrolled in these challenging science and math courses. In addition to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), we are committed to students stretching themselves by taking these high level courses. We have a legacy of setting ambitious goals for student achievement.
Benefits of Athletics and Activities
According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, before Title IX, one in 27 girls played sports. Today that number is two in five. Among the numerous benefits for all students to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities are:
- Leadership skills
- Improved academics
- Improved health
- Positive body image
Success from Athletics to Careers
Title IX’s focus on equity in education and equity in athletics changed the lives of female athletes. It’s interesting to note that there is a high correlation between women who were student-athletes and business success, and a leading factor is sports increase females’ confidence.
Equity Commitment
The heart of Title IX is its efforts to create gender equitable schools. Males and females are expected to receive fair treatment in all areas of public schooling. We do a tremendous job with this in D87. The goal of equity for all students is integrated into our practices. We are committed to our students being affirmed, treated fairly, impartially and non-judgmentally. We prioritize cultivating a culture of inclusion, belonging and high achievement for every student.
It is affirming to see celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Title IX across the country. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who championed this effort more than 50 years ago.
