We are getting ramped up to start our advisee groups; building community within our school and across grades! Super fun start with a "Would you rather?" game to get to know each other. Join us Monday mornings to see what's going on in the school!

We are developing goals for students focused around the ABC's of Success! Act Responsible, Be Respectful, Choose Positive Behaviors, Strive for Excellence! Staff, parents, AND students can nominate students that exhibit these behaviors. Those with multiple recognitions at the end of the school year, will be honored at our Black and Gold Awards in the Spring! Nominate students using this Google form or print off this ticket and bring it to the school

Double Feature planned for February 24th with help from the Thorne Bay Library! One movie in the gym for younger students at the same time one in the commons for the middle school and high school students. Concession stands will be open with an intermission. Movies and times yet to be determined. More info to come!

Goal 1, Objective 2 and 3, Goal 2 Objective 4, This year interest is growing. We have about 10-12 elementary students and 2 Middle School Students. Practice is after school Monday through Thursday.

PreK is focusing on Math this month and they are starting on the concept of adding and subtracting already! Their literacy celebration was about Cat and the Hat party for reading 45 books and

Mr. Jenson’s class are making visits to the Thorne Bay library. Buddy reading with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class, and our resident artist helping with art projects.

Mr. Near's class has been working on multiplication and fractions in math class using Both IXL and IReady computer programs, but most work is done on paper, off the board and from the math books. Occasionally we use manipulatives to better explain the concepts or as a break to have fun. In creative writing, we do a little lesson about something and then they are given a prompt to write using perspective. The last prompt was about beavers. "One day me and my beaver husband Harold and I found a little stream, so we moved there and I found some trees and I started chopping them down (now I already aced all my tests in beaver school so I had nothing to worry) “nom nom nom yummy” I said..."

In 3-5, students are investigating the properties of matter. They investigated a substance called Oobleck and tried to determine whether it was a solid or a liquid. Fourth and fifth grades are working on the base ten number system and relating it to powers of 10. The are also working on writing strong paragraphs as they create a book on Alaska’s poisonous plants. The whole class is learning to play recorders. This involves learning to read simple music. We are so happy that Mr. J. Is sharing his expertise with us, and we are thankful that Amanda Blankenship, Amy McDonald, and Brightways Learning for found funds to purchase our recorders and music books.

ETT (Emergency Trauma Technician) hybrid classes have started. Online portion is occurring during an elective block and hands on is occurring in Klawock on Fridays. Week of February 13th to 17th five high school students are traveling every day for a construction class from 8-5 earning an extra half credit. Others are working on our yearbook, helping in the greenhouse, learning their music and more.

RTI conference was well attended and appreciated by teachers. The ELA curriculum committee will be attending an extra day to preview the four reading curriculums that we can choose from. The four selections we need to choose from are Open Up from EL Education, Benchmark Advance, Core Knowledge Language Arts from Amplify, and Into Reading from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Adults should come and read with their kids and participate in some craft and game activities.

Goals 1,2,3 and 4! Saturday, February 11th, we hosted a literacy game night where families came to learn some new word games. Drawings were held so families could take the games home with them, as well as some free books!

Schools from all around the district ALL ages have been participating virtually in Battle of the Books. It's been a great learning experience since we haven't done this for a while!

As a part of the Alaska Reads Act, the state is requiring a literacy screener for early elementary grades. We are piloting this literacy screener this winter. This screener will be administered grades K-5 and will be starting soon. This window is delayed since we are still preparing for administration. mClass is the digital version of DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). Teachers and paraprofessionals learned to administer the digital platform of this screener (although quite a few have administered and used the paper/pencil version prior).
