Eccles Weekly News
September 15, 2022
Dear Families,
Have I told you lately how great your kids are? It has been so wonderful getting to know them. Already in the second week, we have students living into our ROAR behaviors (Responsible, Organized, Always Safe, and Respectful).
I also want to express my appreciation for the opportunity our staff has each Wednesday to come together during Collaboration Time. We have had two excellent Collaborative Time sessions already this year. As a parent, I know that this creates a challenge. We really appreciate your support each week so our staff can work together during Collaborative Time to improve student learning.
Thank you for saying hello and for your collaboration as we partner together to support our students.
Sincerely,
Kelly

Tech Update
We are getting ready to roll out our iPads again this year and we need charging cables. Many of you returned charging cables last year. Thanks! Please check your home to see if you still have a Canby School District charging cable and brick. If you do, please return it to school. When we distribute iPads, we will include them again.
You might be wondering when you will see iPads at home. Our grade levels will roll them out at different times. We want to make sure that all students understand the expectations of responsibly using a district provided device. We also recognize that some grade levels access their curriculum via iPad and are in more of a hurry to get them in students’ hands. The main thing is that when we use technology, we want to be sure we use it in meaningful ways and we want students to be responsible digital citizens.
Health Reminders
As school begins and we are starting to enter the cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'stay home guidelines'. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students & families healthy this school year.
Please remember to send in any medication for your students, to have them signed in with our Health Assistant. Next week will begin some physical fitness testing in P.E., so it is especially important that we have inhalers available in case your student needs them.
School Hours / Early Release
Thank you for working with your students and the school to adopt our new school hours. As a reminder, students may arrive in the morning no earlier than 15min before school starts (7:45 am); which is also the time students planning to eat breakfast should arrive.
8:00am-2:30pm* Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday
8:00am-1:30pm* Wednesday - Early Release
*To respect staff work time, and the limited supervision available after school, please ensure dismissal plans (bus or pick-up) have been arranged and students are picked up immediately after the bell rings. If you have changes to your students pick-up, please contact the office by 2:00pm / 1:00 pm (Wed.) to let us know.
Arrival & Dismissal
Please see the image below for a recap on our before-school arrival and after-school dismissal procedures. As a reminder, our final morning bell will ring at 8:00 am—students arriving after this time need to check in at the office before going to class. Parents will be permitted to walk students to class to begin the school year, but will need to exit the building by 8:00 am when classes are in full session.
Our dismissal bell rings at 2:30 pm (or 1:30 pm on Wednesdays), and students will be released from class at that time, not earlier. Please allow a few minutes for students to walk to their dismissal spot before they’re available for pick-up, this is especially relevant to car pick-up and walk-up areas.
Arrival
Car drop-off line runs through our West parking lot. Please remain in your vehicle and have your child ready to exit.
Buses will drop off in front of the school.
Students enter the front doors of their coordinating hallway (K-1st main entrance doors, 2nd-3rd grade first hall-SE corner, 4th-6th grade third hall-SW corner).
Dismissal
Car pick-up line will run through our West parking lot. Students line up in our gym with staff and then are released to the gazebo area once their car is seen.
Bus students will be released to get on the bus in front of the school
- Parents & caregivers walk-up area will still be located on the back (North) side of the school. Students can be picked up at the NE corner gym doors near the playground. Parents and caregivers can line up and communicate with staff at the gym entrance and the student will be released to them.
We want to help you get to know who we are. Each week we will highlight a couple of staff members. Enjoy getting to know a little bit about us!
Mrs. Adams is our Library Instructional Assistant. Your student sees her in the library and in the cafeteria during breakfast at 7:45. Mrs. Adams has been working with students in a variety of teaching roles for 18 years. It is her third year working in the Eccles library. Mrs. Adams lives in the Canby house her grandparents moved into in the 1950’s. Her favorite kid author is Bill Peet and she has several pets. She and her husband have two each: dogs, cats, and chickens. Their names are Willow, Dobby, Yuna, Ol’ Gregg, Dorothy, and Laverne. Say, “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Adams!
Mrs. Gingerich is a member of our 1st grade teaching team. Mrs Gingerich has been teaching for 12 years, 8 here at Eccles. Her husband teaches at Ninety-one and her twin sons just started kindergarten this year. Her family loves living in this community! Her family pets include fish. Anybody need guppies? Her dad is her hero and her motto is, “Remember who you are.” Say, “Hi!” the next time you see Mrs. Gingerich!

Meals at School
We are excited to welcome back our broadened meal selections this year, including the salad bar! Students will receive their meal card the first week of school, and staff will be equipped to help them learn this process. Meals will always be provided to students, no matter their application status or meal plan balance.
If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families. Even if your family is not in need of free or reduced price meals, filling out the application can get your family multiple other benefits. This information is also important for our schools and districts, to get certain funding for the future.

Volunteers
While we will be able to once again have parents/guardians volunteer at the school, we will be moving forward slowly with this practice.
- This must be pre-arranged with the teacher and/or specialist that you are assisting.
- All new* volunteers must be registered and pass a background check in order to volunteer for any classroom, field trip, or activity on-site.
- All volunteers must sign in and out upon entry and exit of the school building.
*If you did not complete this process last year or are a new incoming family, an application must be submitted through the Canby School District.
Student Verification
We need your help (if you have not already done this)! To start out each new year, families need to verify their student’s information as part of the re-enrollment process for this school year. This is done by logging into ParentVUE. Click the ‘Family Updates and New Student Enrollment’ link in the right hand corner of the page, and it will help guide you through the necessary steps. Please make sure you are seeing the current ‘2022-2023’ school year listed. If you log in to see your student's class placement, it should walk you through this process.
Some of the items you will need to verify are address updates, emergency contacts & school closure plan, and transportation (arrival & dismissal plan).
If you have any questions, need your ParentVUE activation key, or need assistance resetting your password, please contact our Registrar, Denise Sanchez Dominguez, by calling the office or email denise.sanchez@canby.k12.or.us.
Communicating with Remind
We are excited to share that the Canby School District is using Remind district-wide! If you're not already familiar with Remind, it's a classroom communication tool that makes it easy to stay involved with your child's learning. Remind is free to use, and you'll be able to get and send messages in multiple languages on any device—even a simple text message from your phone!
When your student’s teacher sets up Remind, you’ll receive an email or text message with steps to help set up your account.. All you need to do is follow the steps in the message to finish setting up your account and begin communicating with your student’s teacher.
We're excited to make connecting with our families more engaging!
