SVF Coral Reef VR Adventure
The Something Very Fishy team enjoyed bringing the SVF Coral Reef Virtual Reality Adventure to grades 4 & 5 at Blue Ridge Elementary (Seneca, SC) and Central Academy of the Arts (Central, SC). The program, led by team leaders Randi Sims and Kea Payton, consisted of a hands on lesson using plaster replicas about coral biodiversity and future risks, a coral reef card game showing how algae, corals, and reef fishes interact in our ever changing ocean environment, and a virtual reality SCUBA dive experiences where the students counted fish as part of a Citizen Science research project. This pilot program helped us to refine our goals for increasing ocean and climate literacy using virtual reality technology. This in-class pilot study was made possible by a grant from the SC Sea Grant Consortium.
