8th grade science teacher Mr. Broadway is our Teacher of the Month for December! After attending Capturing Kids' Hearts this summer, he implemented their strategies to build a trusting environment in his classroom. He greets every students at the door every day, hears their "Good Things", holds them accountable to their agreed upon expectations, and launches every class with the positive message, "Expect the Best!", to which his students reply (well...more like yell), "Be the Best!" As a member of the 8th grade science team, he has contributed to raising assessment scores on every District Common Assessment that our 8th graders have taken for science this year. As if that is not enough, together with the Sunshine Committee, Mr. Broadway provides unexpected treats for our staff like a coffee cart and venison chili! We are proud and inspired by the work he is doing.

Round Rock Independent School District (ISD) is excited to host our 1st Annual District-wide Career Exploration Fair. Our vision for this event is to provide an opportunity for students in grades K-12, with their parents, to explore the various careers that await them in their future. Research shows that when asked, students can name a basic list of occupations; however, our goal as educators is to broaden the horizons of the next generation by promoting an atmosphere in which they can explore and gain the knowledge of the vast array of careers available to them. We believe that if we start early with connecting future job seekers with potential employers, we can feel confident that every child in the district has the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills, and the confidence they need to ensure successful futures. For Round Rock ISD to succeed in creating this atmosphere for our students, we need business partners like you to join us on March 5, 2018 at Round Rock High School from 6pm-8pm (set up begins at 5pm). Both our Science and Geometry teachers have been partnering with UT School of Education to bring the best instruction to our students. This week, Ms. Moyer's geometry students started an ADMI (Argumentative Driven Math Inquiry/Investigation) project. Students were given the task, as city planners, to build a hospital between three cities in Idaho. The goal was to find the most equitable location. They have learned about the four different centers of triangles, and using that information, determine which location is best for the new hospital. Their claim is then proposed to the class with their evidence/proof that their location is the best one. Students had the choice of using a program called Geogebra (online mapping) or using basic resources such as rulers and patty paper (yes, it's a thing...similar to tracing paper). They also gathered online data on population and government regulations regarding national forests due to the fact that there is a National Forest between the cities. This is a quality lesson that incorporates real life application and the students are enjoying it. Thank you Ms. Moyer and UT for planning such engaging lessons for our students.
