STEM Learning Takes Off!
By Suzy Quinlan
Ten days, seven planes, boats, not-a-boats, busses, and so, so many steps! Nine students and two teachers adventured to Venice, Italy, Mainland Greece, seeing Athens, Mycenae, Epidaurus and Corinth, as well as one of the Greek islands, Samos. Our highlights in Venice included a tour of the MOSE flood control system with the director of the project, going to the top of the Campanile of San Marco standing where Galileo Galilei explained his Horizons of Man on Aug. 21, 1609. We toured the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Cathedral and had rowing lessons, each learning to row a gondola both in canals and in open water.
In Greece, we crossed the country seeing the Acropolis, Olympia – where the Olympics started and where the torch is lit every two years prior to the torch relay to the host country. We experienced the acoustics at the theater in Epidaurus built in 340-300 BCE. We saw the Treasury of Atreus and the Lions Gate in Mycenae. We then walked the old town of Athens and saw Greek and Roman artifacts and ruins galore.
Lastly we flew to Samos, a Greek island 20 miles from Turkey. Here our highlight was climbing Mount Kerkis (the 2nd highest peak in the Agean) and entering the cave of mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras. He fled to the cave while being hunted by Polycrates in 400 BCE.
Big Apple Internship
Junior Ellie Lang traveled to New York City to participate in an internship with fashion company Frances Valentine. “This internship helped me develop my knowledge of marketing, wholesale, brand creativity, product, e-commerce, and showroom basics. This experience introduced me to all the different departments necessary to create a business. Having the pleasure to explore more about fashion, the company helped me come to conclusions on which departments I feel most confident in. The high point of this trip was the creative team allowing me to help them design a dress and adding my own twist. While getting near the end of my stay, I worked closely with the CEO Elyce Arons, who provided me with valuable knowledge to use in the future when looking to create my own business.” Ellie is hoping to do this internship again next year but she hopes to work more closely with the creative team. Her internship gave her insight into the fashion business, but also showed her a different lifestyle.
Taking a Test Drive
During senior Jake Stout’s internship with Southern Roads Auto, he was able to get a first-hand look at the auto sales industry and learn about market research, marketing, and finance. “In the mornings when I was not welcoming customers, my time was spent helping to clean cars or review the CarFax reports on certain vehicles that were going to the auction later in the day. My mentor taught me how to look out for the small details when reviewing information on CarFax which could lead us to not buy the car. Whenever a customer came in, my mentor and I would always greet them and then walk with them out to the car they were interested in. After the test drive, we would complete the process of a financial credit report which would allow customers to either be approved or denied a loan for a car. Working at Southern Roads Auto not only taught me the process of buying a car, but also lifelong business skills that I will carry on into my future career.”
Under the Microscope
During Winter Term, GWA senior Ellie Woodson interned in the Microbiology Lab at Piedmont Athens Regional with her mentor Christina Eskandari. “In the lab, we worked with different bacteria, and I was allowed to perform some of the testing. I got to see the lab side of the medical field which was super eye-opening to the ‘behind the scenes’ of going to the doctor. In the microbiology lab, they test for many different things. From flu and covid, to tuberculosis and meningitis, they see it all! There are six different types of benches - respiratory, bloods, stool, urine, wounds, and setups. My personal favorite was respiratory because that was where I could perform the most testing. On week two, we did something called touch plates, which means I touched six different agar plates, once before and after washing hands, before and after sanitizer, and coughing with a mask and without. After two days of incubation, seeing the bacteria that grows on your hands is wild, and makes me more cautious about washing my hands.” Ellie is thankful for this experience and is considering microbiology as a career.
Young Engineers
In STEM, third-grade students were given a challenge to build a shelter that maintains a warmer temperature inside than the temperature outside. After reading about scientists that study and live in Antarctica, the students learned why it is crucial for the scientists to have a warm shelter to escape the harsh conditions.
The students were given limited materials as well constraints which included a working door, fits on a plate, and maintains a warmer temperature inside. Following the engineering design process, students had to identify the problem, brainstorm how to solve the problem, sketch their design, build their shelter, and test their shelter by placing a thermometer inside their shelter as well as outside their shelter. After testing, the students are able to make improvements until the problem is solved.

Upcoming Open House

Kindness Matters
Next week, GWA will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. We will be encouraging our students to participate in Acts of Kindness and engaging in activities on campus. This is a great time of year to bring attention to the positive effects that kindness can have on the giver and the receiver. We encourage our students to be kind all year, but the Great Kindness Challenge is a great and fun reminder. Please join us in completing tasks off the checklist at home, and don't forget to wear your kindness t-shirts on Friday for spirit wear day!
