Kindergarten Pre-Registration 2017/18
Oak Grove School is in the process of determining kindergarten enrollment for the fall of 2017. Having correct enrollment numbers is important to us as it impacts the number of sections, teachers and classrooms.
A child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2017 to attend kindergarten. If you have a student who will be attending kindergarten in the fall, you can click the "Kindergarten 17-18" link from the main Oak Grove web site, or simply go to www.ogschool.org/kindy to pre-register your child.
You will be asked to enter the following information:
- Your child’s name, birthdate and gender
- Parent names and address, phone number and email address
If you have neighbors who do not have children at Oak Grove and do not receive the Oak Grove News, please share this information with them. We would also like to hear from you if you have a child that will be attending 1st grade at Oak Grove next year and is not currently attending kindergarten at Oak Grove this year.

Hour of Code
During the short week of December 19-22, Oak Grove School took part in Hour of Code! Hour of Code is a program that was developed by Code.org to encourage children of all ages to learn about the importance of computer programming (coding) by having them practice coding skills for at least an hour during that week. Coding is the foundation of Computer Science and allows computer programmers (coders) to create and run computer operating systems and applications. Coding also helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. It is also noted on the Code.org website that almost a million computer programming jobs go unfilled because there is such a lack of proficient computer programmers.
OGS traditionally participates in Hour of Code activities during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-9, 2016). Unfortunately this year, that week conflicted with STAR Testing and our Hour of Code week was moved to the week before Winter Break. During this time, classroom teacher provide students with the opportunity to use short, age-appropriate coding tutorials provided by Code.org and/or other coding apps, such as Scratch. The tutorials and apps use a “Lego meets coding” interface where blocks with pre-assigned coding actions are put together to control character actions on the computer screen. With a touch of a button, students can then see what the lines of raw code would have looked like if it had been written by a proficient coder.
If you would like to learn more about coding or Hour of Code, please check out the FAQ or Parent Resource page at Code.org, or ask your child to show you how the tutorials work. If your child was unable to participate in Hour of Code at OGS or would like to learn more about coding, please have them visit the short tutorials at the bottom of the studio.code.org webpage. For students interested in a deeper understanding of coding, have them try the Courses at the top of the studio.code.org page or some of the 3rd party coding apps that are recommended by Code.org. The Courses provide the student with approximately 20 hours of coding instruction.
