Equipping Everyone for Excellence
Sylacauga City Schools Newsletter
Message from our Superintendent
Sylacauga City Schools Family,
November is truly the month of gratitude. We celebrated our Veterans with programs in each of our schools and celebrated our teachers with #ThankAlabamaTeachers Month. A special thank you to Allen Oil for providing the Coffee Bar at each of our schools last month and this month. Our administrators are focusing on several areas this year to ensure all of our students receive a quality education. These focal areas are discussed in this week's Midweek Minute with the Superintendent. As always, thank your for your continued support as together we equip everyone for excellence!

Workforce Development
Sylacauga High School students earn Microsoft Office Specialist credential
Students take credentialing exams in Ms. Sutton’s and Ms. Hosey’s Business Software
Applications class to earn a Career Readiness Indicator. These students earn the Microsoft
Office Specialist credential in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
FAME Apprenticeship Applications for Seniors
Keri Wood, Work Based Learning Specialist with Gadsden State Community College, spoke
to students about their "Earn to Learn" Programs. Seniors that apply and are accepted into
the FAME program earn a wage while attending college and gain priceless work experience
with a global manufacturing leader. While in the two-year program, students can earn as
much as $33,500 to cover their educational expenses and avoid the costly hassle of student
loans. Grants and other forms of financial aid are also a possibility.

STEM Engineering Classes
Mr. Mosley's engineering classes put their skills to the test as they designed and ran
experiments on water wheels to evaluate their potential for generating hydropower.
Nichols Lawson Middle School
Aaron Ritthaler, a Chemical Engineer from OMYA, visited Mrs. Robinson's and Mrs. Fowler's Physical
Science classes to discuss the properties of rocks, mining, the uses of marble, and his own career
path. Meanwhile, Mrs. Cobb's class learned about engineering problem solving and the design
process by creating earthquake-safe buildings, which they test with an earthquake simulator. Finally,
the Career Prep classes explored various science and engineering jobs by playing STEM Bingo with
the Career Coach.
