The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for the Watervliet Marching Band! This was their first competition of the MCBA season and they finished in 1st Place in Flight V and took caption awards for Best Music, Best Marching, and tied for Best General Effect. The next weekend, they headed to Jenison and finished again in 1st place earning all three caption awards for Best Music, Visual, and General Effect. Last Saturday, the band competed in MCBA Championship Prelims. This competition determined the ranking and performance order going into State Finals. For the first time ever, Watervliet is ranked first in their flight going into State Championships! MCBA State Championships is held on Saturday, November 4th at Ford Field in Detroit. Flight V starts at 7:30 am with awards at 9:50 am. Watervliet will be performing last in their flight. Visit www.themcboa.org for more championship information. Good luck to all of our band members this weekend!
MSVMA District 6 Tenor/Bass Invitational
Congratulations to Gage McKie, Trevor Tavolacci, Christopher Parkhurst, and Dakoda Morrison on their fine performance at the MSVMA District 6 Tenor/Bass Invitational held at the Howard Performing Arts Center at Andrews University. The day consisted of rehearsals with conductor, Dr. Jacob Berglin, from Western Michigan University, and a culminating concert featuring a 70 voice invitational choir, and WMU vocal ensemble, Amphion, both conducted by Dr. Berglin. Great job!
CONGRATULATIONS GRACE!
ATTENTION SENIORS
If you would like to earn and wear a serape stole at graduation, you must and pass the biliteracy test. Please contact Mrs. Linda Stofko if you would like to take this test. Only stoles issued by the school can be worn at graduation. One stole issued by the school is a serape and it is allowed to be worn by Seniors who take and pass the biliteracy test. If you have questions, you can also reach out to Ms. Powers.
ALSO--Reminder: English 12 students will need their social security numbers on Monday, November 6 so they can create their FSA ID accounts and eventually receive government financial aid for college. Seniors who are not taking English 12 but want to sign up for their FSA ID account can join Ms. Riedenger's class during 2nd and 4th hours or Mr. Macha's class during 7th hour.
The new FAFSA form is opening in December this year, and to prepare, students and parents should create FSA ID accounts this November. This is the first step towards receiving government financial aid for college. Students will be creating their FSA ID accounts in English 12 classes on Monday, November 6, and they will need their social security numbers for this. A parent or guardian will also need to create a separate FSA ID account. To learn how to create an FSA ID account, please visit https://www.hesaa.org/Documents/Publications/FSA_ID.pdf.

CONGRATULATIONS WATERVLIET MARCHING BAND!
FRESHMAN OCTOBER 2023 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--HANNA ICE
My close family includes my mom, Casey Miller, my older sister, Harley, my younger sister, Joslynn, my little brother, Lucas, and my grandmother, Janet Miller.
My favorite class is either World History / Geography or Spanish 1 because I like learning about what happened in the past and I like Spanish 1 because it's interesting to learn about a foreign language!
My favorite teacher is either Mrs. Lefor or Mr. Linderman because they teach my favorite subjects and are very understanding.
My favorite sport is swimming.
Some of the things I do for fun are coloring, writing, baking, decorating / cleaning my room, and shopping.
I plan to attend a good college to become a midwife after high school.
I'm proud to be a WHS panther because I love learning.
FRESHMAN OCTOBER 2023 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--CLAIRE MOORE
I usually spend time with my parents or grandparents after school. I like to do different things not only with them individually but go on trips as well. Everyone has a different personality and hobbies which makes every interaction amazing. My mom has two kittens named Moxie and Elton that I love a lot, and recently my Dad has gotten a puppy, Lola.
My favorite class this year to no surprise has been the musical classes, high school band and the jazz band. I have a deep love for music and getting to perform concerts and competitions has been a blast. Regardless, I still love many other classes that Iām in like art and history.
Many other students and I have always deeply appreciated Mrs. Hollandsworth for her work for our band program and general interaction with students, and because of this favored her. Sheās been teaching me for at least over 3 years now throughout middle school and I admire all she does. I have new teachers every year that I meet and love, but you canāt stay with them or interact for such a long time that you may get with programs like band, choir, or art.
Iām active in the Watervliet Band/Marching band, playing the flute. I also play saxophone in the Jazz Band. Iāve also recently joined the Student Advisory program and been active in that as well.
In my free time I enjoy listening to different kinds of music, making my own art, playing video games, and even playing instruments like the piano and guitar. I also go on camping trips every summer with family friends to new places and national parks to explore and learn about.
I probably will go into a college for some type of creative path that would include a form of music, art, design, or writing; Iād also work towards getting my own job and home.
WHS offers lots of unique programs in the education system that many schools do not and students and staff generally create a very good atmosphere to be in. Many parts of the school like the Marching Band have great achievements and itās great to be a part of something not only that makes people happy but accomplishes things as well.
Congratulations to our middle school and high school choirs
Congratulations to our middle school and high school choir members for their excellent performance on their fall concert Thursday evening! The night was filled with music following the theme, āLive in Colorā. Some of the featured songs were āBlackbirdā, by the Beatles, āTrue Colorsā, with solos by Ella Harris and Christopher Parkhurst. āFor Goodā, from the musical āWickedā with solos by Gabby Guthrie and Sienna Harris, āLet It Growā from The Lorax movie with solos by Billy Varner, Jaxon Anderson, and Cierra Woodson, āThe Song That Nature Singsā, āRainstormā, āShoshone Love Songā and a mass choir number entitled, āMore to Meā with solos by Cadia Raines, Jenna Ritter and Lauren Lovell.
Great job, choirs and Director Tami Brush!

TIME TO REGISTER FOR SEMESTER 2 DUAL ENROLLMENT
Dual enrollment is the process by which a high school student completes a college course or courses during the school day while also earning credit toward his/her high school diploma. These college courses are completed at the cost of Watervliet Public Schools. Dual enrollment at WHS is in partnership with Lake Michigan College.
There are many benefits of dual enrollment. Dual enrolling in high school increases the likelihood that a student will enroll in post secondary coursework after high school. It eases the transition from high school to college as students get to experience what it is like to take college courses while still in high school. Because students are taking college courses in high school, it lessens the time that is needed on a college campus to complete a degree after high school. Dual enrolling in high school lessens the cost of a college degree as Watervliet Public Schools assumes the cost of college courses while a student is in high school. Dual enrollment also allows students to explore classes they might be interested in outside of the traditional high school offerings and can provide more rigorous coursework when needed.
We would like to see as many Panthers who are eligible and interested consider dual enrollment. If your child has interest in pursuing this option for the spring semester, please encourage him/her to go to the counseling office this week to seek out more information. The counseling secretary (Mrs. Tyler) will get your child started in this process by looking at a course catalog at the offerings available at LMC. In addition to classes offered in Benton Harbor and online, three classes are offered on site at WHS so that students do not have to leave the school campus in order to complete a course.
This semester, 95 Panthers are dual enrolled in a total of 120 courses while also working toward their high school diplomas at Watervliet High School. We would like to see your child take advantage of this opportunity as well. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns on the topic of dual enrollment. We are eager to make the opportunity available to eligible students with interest. Registration for semester 2 at LMC opened on Monday, October 23rd. If your child is interested in dual enrollment, he/she should see Mrs. Tyler in the Counseling Office right away.
JUNIOR OCTOBER 2023 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--AUSTIN SMITH
In my household, my family includes me and my mom Melissa Smith. Close family not in my household that I visit with the most are my Grandma Murlene Wolter and my Aunt Vernell Wright.
My favorite class is U.S. History in Depth. I like history and the class really gets in depth into it.
It's hard to pick a favorite teacher for this school year.
I'm not in any sports or clubs.
I'm an avid writer. If you walk up to me in my free time, I may be seen writing something. The longest story I've written so far is 17 pages with 4440 words. Eventually I might beat that record. I'm challenging myself to go longer and longer. I like listening to music while doing something. I just can't handle silence. I also like watching movies.
I'm still debating on what I'll be doing after high school. Something I'm kinda thinking of is something with writing.
I'm proud to be a panther because of the amazing staff. They really seem to truly want their students to learn and help them if needed and they're not just doing it because it's required of them.
JUNIOR OCTOBER 2023 STUDENT OF THE MONTH--RILEY PRESTON
My name is Riley Preston. I live with my Mom, Heather, Dad, Adam, and my younger brother named Tyler. My favorite class has to be one of two, yearbook with Mrs. Brant, or Ceramics and Sculpture with Mrs. Hunt. I love yearbook with Mrs. Brant because I love to attend all the activities and enjoy capturing all the memories we make in highschool, and using my creative mind to condense it all into a book to share. But I also love Ceramics and sculpture with Mrs. Hunt. I enjoy art with Mrs. Hunt because I love sketching things and making them come to life by using clay. My favorite teacher is a tie between Mrs. Brant and Mrs. Hunt. They are both amazing, If you need anything they both can help in any way. I participate in many things outside of the school day. I play volleyball, soccer, and basketball. I am also in student council again this year. For fun outside of school I hangout with my friends, I love shopping and spending money. After high school, I plan on attending Douglas J. Aveda Institute in Grand Rapids. To pursue a career in cosmetology. While attending beauty school, I will take business classes at Grand Valley University. I am proud to be a Watervliet Panther because I love being apart and representing a small town.
THANK YOU FLEMING BROTHERS OIL COMPANY AND WATERVLIET SHELL STATION!
Watervliet Public Schools has received another generous donation this fall from the Flemming Brothers Oil Company. Fleming Brothers Oil is a Southwest Michigan-based company. Its owners set aside a portion of sales proceeds from Watervliet Shell Station's The Giving Pump to donate to Watervliet Public Schools. The designated Giving Pump is specially marked with colorful signage. Every time a customer uses this pump, they are supporting our schools.
A big thank you to Fleming Brothers Oil Company, to our local Watervliet Shell Station, and to the members of our community for your continued support of our school district!

In my free time I love to camp and read books.
Something that may surprise others about me? The 2023-2024 school year is the first time since 2000 that I havenāt had a child attending Watervliet schools!!
