8th Grade Social Studies Update
Week of 10/5-10/9
Hello!
Last week we completed our notes that covered exploration and ended the week with a quiz. We also covered absolute/relative location and reviewed latitude and longitude. This week we will focus on learning more about explorers and the impact of exploration. You will research explorers on your own and map their routes. We will also take some time to discuss the impact on trade and Native Americans. The difference between primary and secondary sources will be reviewed. We will be analyzing primary resources during The Age of Exploration.
We have covered a lot of material the past few weeks. The unit test will be Friday and you will be able to use your notes on the test. It is most important to me that you are able to make connections and apply the information.
Below are a few more new updates.
Why do we take notes?
We take notes in class to improve focus and understanding of concepts. Note-taking improves active listening, comprehension, and retention.
What is Jamboard?
This is an interactive digital whiteboard. We will be using this as an exit slip in class. We will utilize the sticky notes to share what we learned at the end of class. Use the link below to access the Jamboard.

What's up next?
After we we finish learning about exploration and the impact it had on the world, we will start learning about colonization in America.
Explorations Update
We will continue to discuss current events in class. We will be starting the novel Refugee this week. We will start with a pre-reading activity and focus on social studies standards as we read the novel, specifically geography and history standards. The top six students in the FANschool league will be competing in the playoffs and continue utilizing the trends map.
