KCSD & Me: COVID-19 UPDATE

Klamath County Public Health on Monday, Oct. 12, confirmed the county has had more than 21 new cases of COVID-19 for two consecutive weeks. These numbers exceed the recommended 30 cases per 100,000 metric that allows the district to provide in-person classes to our K-3 students and at our small, rural schools. However, because the new cases are not linked to schools and there is no unexplained spread within our community, county health officials recommend that we continue our current in-person education models.

The most recent guidance from the Oregon Department of Education allows school districts and public health officials to work together to determine whether schools may continue in-person instruction if the county exceeds metrics.

From Jennifer Little, director, Klamath County Public Health:

“As of Oct. 9, 2020, Klamath County Public Health officials recommend that in person education for schools operating under the exceptions to the metrics continue at this time. Though local cases have seen a recent spike, these cases are largely connected to known outbreaks and are not indicative of expanded community spread. There have not been cases linked to in-person instruction in schools and there is no indication of unexplained spread within the school or broader community.

“If trends indicate a return to comprehensive distance learning is recommended, public health will work with the school district to provide ample time for planning and notification of students and staff. We would aim to provide a week of lead time.”

Because of the increase in cases last week, the soonest students can return to in-person instruction in schools not already operating under that model is the week of Nov. 2. Case rates must meet metrics for three weeks in a row for schools to reopen. This impacts reopening plans for Chiloquin Schools and the district’s plans to bring back English Language Learners who are not currently doing in-person classes.
