Hornet Nation Communication
July 13, 2022
Hello, Harrison!
HCS Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying summer to its fullest. What a beautiful community we have, with so many opportunities to do fun activities outside.
While I continue to listen and learn about HCS, I did not want to wait to begin regular communication with you. Below you will also see some times and dates where I will be available to informally meet and chat with anyone who would like to drop by. As always, if you see me out and about, please stop me and introduce yourself - you don't need to wait for one of the gatherings! Also, if you would like a more formal one-on-one meeting, you can always call and make an appointment with me. I want to meet and hear from as many of you as possible.
One night at home last week, I started googling "hornets" to see what more I could find out about the species, and came across several interesting things. Most importantly, I was reminded that as hornets travel from flower to flower, they pollinate them. I learned that without hornets, the seasonal growth cycle would be stunted and the food chain impacted. This really struck a chord with me -- because every single one of us in our Hornet community plays an important and vital role in helping each other grow and flourish.
Speaking of growing and flourishing, even though our youth learners are away from school right now, many of our adult learners have been busy here in Harrison and away in Grand Rapids (I have included pictures below). Teachers use summer for the all-important re-charge, and they also use it for learning so that the time out of classrooms during the school year is as small as possible. Just like we would want our doctor, electrician, or mechanic to have knowledge and skills around the latest diagnostics and methods, so too do we want our teachers to have opportunities to grow their professional practice. Our learning in Grand Rapids was facilitated by Communications by Design, and we will continue to share more about this exciting work and its intended impact on student growth.
Thanks for reading, and please reach out with any questions.
Hornet Pride,
Judy

Our K-12 ELA teachers collaborated on June 14 to discuss priority content standards and vertical alignment across grade levels. Conversations were impactful and an excellent example of cross-pollination. This work will continue into the school year and is being led by our Curriculum Director, Kelly Lipovsky.

On June 23-24, Andrea Andera, Joe Ashcroft, Brad Carlstrom, Kelly Lipovsky, Jennifer Thrush, Stacey VanAntwerp, and Judy Walton took a deep dive into purpose-driven integration of technology in our classrooms and how to best support teachers, students, and families in the coming school year.

Following the administrative team work, more than 30 middle and high school teachers spent June 27-28 together around transformative practices intended to increase student engagement. and learn new methods of teaching 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking through the purposeful use of technology. Our K-5 teachers will enjoy the same learning experience in 2023.
