Principal's Notes
Pond Cove Elementary School - November 19, 2023
Principal's Message
As we stand on the brink of a well-deserved Thanksgiving Break, we take a moment to reflect on the powerful partnerships we share with the incredible families of Pond Cove. Together, we are not just educators and parents – we are architects of the future, diligently molding the hearts and minds of Cape Elizabeth's youngest learners.
The responsibility we bear at Pond Cove is profound, and each day, we wholeheartedly commit ourselves to meeting the diverse needs of every student who walks through our doors. In this collective endeavor, it is crucial to recognize that, despite differing perspectives on the best approaches, we are undeniably part of the same team. The journey ahead requires the collaboration of every member, as it is together that we will propel our school towards greater heights.
Let's embrace honest communication and open-minded listening, understanding that these are the cornerstones of our shared success. By learning from one another, we enrich the educational experience for every child entrusted to us. It is the limitless potential within our collaborative spirit that moves us forward.
Our commitment to delivering nothing but the best for our students remains unwavering. As we pause for a moment of gratitude during this Thanksgiving Break, let it be a reminder that our collective efforts are shaping a future where our students thrive. Pond Cove stands strong because of the dedication and collaboration of each person involved – thank you for being an essential part of our shared journey. Together, we ensure that the excellence our students deserve is not just a goal but a reality we continue to achieve.
With appreciation,
Tiffany & Sarah

Fourth Grade Opinion Writing
This week our opinion writers in fourth grade brought in collections from home to evaluate and to choose their favorite.
They had many different types of collections from football cards, rocks, earrings, bows, toys, books, and even nail polishes! Fourth graders began by carefully looking at their collections, then made a list of factors to help them judge the collections fairly. Students next made a plan- or graphic organizer to gather their reasons (details) of why they chose this as the best of their collection.
Fourth graders then began drafting their piece of writing. Next week they will work to stretch their plan into a 5 paragraph essay on their favorite piece of the collection.
Grade 3 Is Working on Math Operations
Third Graders are moving into a new math unit. In Unit 3 of Everyday Math 4, third graders will add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers using a variety of problem-solving strategies and computational skills.
Everyday Mathematics encourages children to choose from any of the methods explored in the unit, or invent their own computation methods. When children create and share their own ways of computing instead of simply learning one method, they begin to realize that problems can be solved in more than one way. They are more willing and able to take risks, think logically, and produce more reasonable answers.
In Unit 3, children will:
• Describe rules for patterns and use them to solve problems.
• Estimate to check whether their answers are reasonable.
• Add using the partial-sums and column-addition methods. Subtract using the counting-up and expand-and-trade methods.
• Use helper facts and create arrays to solve unknown multiplication facts.
• Learn helpful rules and new groups of multiplication facts.
• Find and write equivalent names for numbers within name-collection boxes.
• Collect and organize data in scaled bar and picture graphs
Kindergarten Music
In music class this week, Kindergarteners learned a scarf routine to match the form of the music.

School Picture Retake Day - Wednesday, November 29
Retake day is for new students and staff members, transfer students, or for anyone who may have missed the initial picture day, OR for anyone who was unhappy with their original picture and would like to give it another try. If a student would like the retake photo to replace the original photo, please have the student return the original picture package to the photographer on picture day. We will replace the original package at no additional cost.
If this is the first time being photographed, just have the student/staff go to the camera and we’ll create a proof for them that will be sent to the school (and/or to their family email if we have that information). These proofs will be delivered approx. 4 weeks after picture day. An order code will be on the proof along with ordering instructions.
