Important Message from our Health Room
With the winter and flu season upon us, here it is important to remember some helpful guidelines to help decide what to do if your child tells you they are not feeling well.
When to keep your child home from school:
Ø a temperature of more than 100
Ø nausea or vomiting
Ø diarrhea
Ø pale or flushed face
Ø persistent cough
Ø earache
Ø thick discharge from the nose
Ø painful sore throat
Ø rash or infection of the skin
Ø red or pink eyes
If your child had a fever the evening before or through the night, keep them home. They should have a normal temperature under 99 degrees for 24 hours prior to returning. If the symptoms are severe or persist for more than 24 hours, you should contact your health care provider. It is up to you to be alert to your child’s health and to decide when it is best to send him/her to school. This is also when you need to consider if your child would be contagious to classmates. If your child complains of being sick or does not look well after they reach school, we will contact you. Therefore, it is important that updated information and phone numbers be provided. As you read this, please remember these are general guidelines. You know your child the best!
Prevention is the key! Hand washing is the best preventative measure. Wash hands thoroughly and often. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth without clean hands. Please remind your student to practice good hygiene.
Please notify the staff in the health room if your child develops a contagious condition, such as chickenpox, strep throat, flu, lice, pink eye, mono, pneumonia, etc. As an employee of the Frederick County Health Department, the Registered Nurse follows CDC guidelines to investigate and to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. She tracks student illness by monitoring absenteeism, noting the number of student visits and symptoms of illness seen in the health room, and gathering information from families and staff.
Thank you for your cooperation. You can contact the health room at 240-566-9217.
