The IMS Connection
Volume 16, Issue 10: JUNE 2021
Greetings to our Islip Middle School Families,
This past year has been a challenge, and through it all we persevered. I am incredibly proud of the children for making the most of a challenging situation and coming out on top. We are grateful for each new opening that comes our way enabling us to return to the world in which we knew. It’s been said many times, “you don’t know what you have, until you don’t have it”. Never has that phrase ever meant so much.
I hope this summer gives you time to appreciate the simple things in life we may not have had a year ago.
Until next time, I wish you all a happy and healthy summer.
Warm regards,
Dr. Timothy Martin
Principal

Renaissance would like to congratulate everyone on their hard work and dedication throughout the School year. Enjoy your well-deserved summer break!
Greetings IMS Families,
It is hard to believe the end of the school year is upon us. June is a time for celebration and culmination, and the end of this school year should be no different. This school year has been unlike any other, we have gone from Zooming and hybrid learning to full in-person instruction. We continue to see the world slowly begin its return to normalcy. It is our hope that next school year will allow for a complete return of all the events we were not able to do and celebrate together. Although our end of year celebrations are not what we have traditionally had, nonetheless you can all still celebrate your accomplishments and reflect on the past year and look forward to the road ahead.
One of the hardest parts of the end of the year is saying goodbye to our 8th graders. Although we will miss you, we know you are in good hands and are always just a short walk away. To our incoming 6th grade students and parents, we welcome you and encourage you to get involved early and often. Buckle up for an amazing middle school experience and we’ll see you in September!
Please check us out on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to view photos, videos, and news about amazing things going on at IMS. Our eBoard has up-to-date info on everything you need to navigate your time at IMS, but if any questions do arise, I invite you to reach out to me via e-mail at jcohen@islipufsd.org or call me directly at (631) 650-8515.
Regards,

Islip Middle School Students Entering Grades 6-8 Summer Reading Challenge 2021
“Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.”
– John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars
Hello Readers,
Whether you're outside enjoying the sunshine or inside relaxing in the comfort of your own home, remember to pick up a good book this summer. Why? Summer reading provides an excellent opportunity for students to practice the literacy skills developed during the school year. Plus, it’s fun! You can read stories filled with adventure, mystery, or whatever interests you.
Below, you will find the information that you need to enjoy a reading-filled summer and to take part in Islip Middle School's Summer Reading Challenge:
- Islip Public Library has 2 Summer Reading Clubs: BIG-TIME READERS for children up to and including those entering 7th grade and TEEN CLUB for students entering grades 7 - 12 (June 26 - August 21). Registration opens June 19. Discover new authors and genres (or old favorites), earn raffles, win prizes, and connect with other readers. For more information, visit www.isliplibrary.org or call 631-581-5933. https://www.isliplibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/SRC-2021_4-Large-540p.mp4
- Join the New York State Senate's Summer Reading Program: Tails & Tales. Register at www.nyread.com. Create a profile; record your reading progress; earn a certificate.
- Please Note: This is the Summer Reading Challenge for ALL classes. Students entering 7Honors, 8Honors, and 9Honors in September do not have a different assignment.
Summer Reading Challenge 2021
Are you ready to flex your summer reading muscles? Complete three of the challenges provided below. Then, create digital, visual, and/or written responses (i.e., a book trailer on FlipGrid, a book review on PowerPoint, a scrapbook, a poster, a reading journal, or any other creative presentations) that show your work. In September, submit this material to your teacher, and you'll take part in our reading celebration and earn some extra credit!
Find a topic to explore: perhaps cars...or coding. Read at least two books (or articles) about that topic.
Listen to an audio book (in English or another language).
Form a neighborhood book club--or read a book with a friend.
Write a letter to a character; give him/her advice about a problem he/she faces.
Take a picture of yourself (or draw it) reading somewhere unusual.
Make something cool. Learn how to do it by reading a book.
Build STEM Skills. Read about science & engineering from these websites: National Geographic Kids, NASA Kids' Club, & Design Squad Global.
Read a book--and then watch the movie. How do they compare & contrast? Did you prefer the movie or book? Explain why.
Read a book written in a language other than English.
Create a music playlist (5 songs) that connects to your book. Explain each of your song choices.
Be generous. Give a character three needed gifts. Identify the gifts--and explain the reason for each gift.
Read about our world. Check out Time for Kids, National Geographic Kids, & other kid-friendly magazines.
Join an Islip Public Library Summer Reading Club.
Which character from your book would you like to invite to your house? Explain why.
Illustrate your favorite part of the book.
Create a timeline for your favorite book: Outline what happened in the story.
Enjoy your Summer! Happy Reading!
