Attendance Matters!
Key things to remember related to Attendance:
• School doors open at 8:30 and instruction begins at 9:00 AM! 8:30 -9:00 is an important time to have breakfast (all students receive a free breakfast) and see friends and prepare for their day.
• Set an attendance goal for your family – LESS THAN TWO IS GOOD FOR YOU!! If children miss 2 days a month they are chronically absent from school even if it’s excused. This will create many problems for your child to keep up with school.
• If your child is absent, a note is required to explain why they are not in school. If they had a doctor, dentist or other medical appointment, bring a note from the office. You can email notes to Waves.attendance@fcps.org
• Reach out to school staff if you are struggling with getting your child to school regularly.

TITLE 1 TRANSMISSION
Our schoolwide Title 1 brochure has been sent home with all students. This document is a summary of the benefits and services we provide to our students and families as a Title 1 school, as well as describes your family and parental rights for being a part of our Title 1 community. If you did not receive this or would like an additional copy, please contact Laura Rottmund, our Title 1 Family Engagement Coordinator (240) 236-3900.
Our first Family Engagement event will be held at the end of October. This event is called "Happy, Healthy Kids" and will feature exciting experiences and activities for families that focus on physical and mental health. Stay tuned for more information! An invitation to this event will be sent home with your child in October!
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
In order to keep our students and family members safe we ask that you please follow the guidance below for arrival and dismissal. This is especially important now with the construction of the new building and the added traffic during arrival and dismissal.
Some reminders regarding Waverley's dismissal:
1. Please use the crosswalks and sidewalks when dropping off and picking up your child from school as a walker. There is one crosswalk located right in front of the construction gate and another located in front of the car rider loop. Due to ongoing construction and high traffic during arrival and dismissal, using the crosswalks ensures your safety as well as those of the students.
2. Dismissal Time is at 3:25 daily.
3. Walker students are picked up at the same door they entered in the morning beginning at 3:28 PM. Please wait for your child at the door behind the cone in the grade level for your youngest child. Display your child's (children's) name sign so we can ensure your child gets to their family member.
4. Car rider students will meet their family in the car rider loop. Please display your child's name sign in the front window of your vehicle.
5. Transportation changes must be called into the front office (240-236-3900) by 2:30pm. No changes will be granted after that time due to safety reasons and the student will be sent home via their normal dismissal route.
Thank you for your cooperation and help in keeping Waverley students safe!
Counselor's Corner
All classrooms, PK-5 are participating in PATHS lessons. PATHS stands for Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies and is the FCPS Social Emotional Learning Curriculum. All students receive PATHS lessons daily for twenty minutes. The following information is about the "PATHS Kid of the Day" Portion of the program, where one student is chosen from the class to be the PATHS Kid of the Day. These students proudly wear a sticker when they are chosen and are also given compliments by their peers. This encourages kindness and promotes healthy self-esteem. Please check out the following links for additional information about this part of the PATHS program.

MEDIA MATTERS
In Media class students have been enjoying a year when they can finally pick their books in person! Students in grades Pre-K-5 have all had the chance to check out a book at least once a week. Please keep in mind that library books are only borrowed. Students must return their books when they are done with them. This month, students are exploring Hispanic heritage month by hearing stories from various Hispanic Authors or stories about the culture. To better support the Spanish speakers in our community, Frederick County Public Library has created a Facebook page for anyone to access. The page has lots of information geared towards Spanish speakers. The page can be accessed with the following flyer link.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ART?
In art we have been getting to know the art room and art materials.
Full day PreK has been enjoying a story and creating artwork after listening to the story.
Kindergarten has been working on colors and shapes as well as focusing on basic classroom rules.
First grade is covering lines this term as well as discussing colors.
Second grade has been working on neutral colors and creating a lot of artwork inspired by nature.
Third grade has been talking about complementary colors.
Mrs. Williams’ fourth grade has been work on an in depth project that is shown here.
Fifth grade has created a brightly colored piece focusing on a Banyan tree with a variety of colors in oil pastel.
All grades are creating artwork inspired by Hispanic Heritage month and it will be displayed in the building.
If your student ever comes home with paint on their clothes most will come in the wash. The majority of materials we use in art is washable. Please contact Mrs. Williams or Ms. Yap if you have any concerns.
P.E. PARTICULARS
In PE all classes have been making steady improvement on their Fitness during the Coaches Warm-ups. We are focused on your students overall fitness level and are assisting them to help them improve each week. Our end goal is to have them take ownership of their Fitness and become their own Personal Trainer. We are encouraging them to do their PE Homework at home.(play outside activities that include running like soccer, basketball, ride a bike etc. and do extra push-ups, curl-ups, and planks). We also have been learning a variety of Action Games which focus on team play as well as a variety of skills. Next month we will focus on the team sport of Soccer and Jump-Rope. Before I forget a Big Congratulations goes out to our Waverley Cross-Country Team that participated in the Hugh B. Nolan Meet at Keys Stadium on Sept. 21st. Next Track Meet will be in May for our 4th and 5th grades as well.
Blessings. Coach McRoberts
MUSIC NEWS
In Music class we have finished up our unit about our Voices. Students made high sounds and low sounds and we sang a lot. We learned that everyone’s voice is different, but everyone can learn to sing high and low. We are now in a unit about Beat and Rhythm. Rhythm is about the shorter and longer sounds in music, how we count how long or short a note is, and how the notes fit together in music.. In most classes the students are playing hand drums. In Kindergarten and Pre-K Music class the students are playing rhythm sticks. Later students will improvise with their voices and bodies and also in grades 3 - 5 they will write a short rhythm composition. Classroom music teachers are Denise.Berry@fcps.org or Rachel.Mordente@fcps.org
4th and 5th grade students may choose to learn a Band or Orchestra instrument. Instrument lessons are on Wednesdays only starting October 6, 2021. Parents must sign up their child. Mrs. Berry has more sign-up forms if anyone needs one. The Band/Orchestra teachers are Victor.Racster@fcps.org and Jonathan.Boehmer@fcps.org. October 13 is the last day Mr. Racster and Mr. Boehmer will accept sign-ups.
Math Matters!
Shapes Are All Around Us!
Does your child know their shapes? Students knowing their shapes 'should help children learn more about the world they live in while also playing a significant role in supporting the development of number concepts' (passage from Van de Walle, Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics).
Pre-K
- focus on 2-D shape: triangle, circle, square, rectangle
- focus on 3-D shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone
Kindergarten
- focus on 2-D shapes: triangle, circle, square, rectangle, hexagon
- focus on 3-D shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, cone
First Grade
- focus on 2-D shapes: rectangle, square, trapezoid, triangle, hexagon, rhombus
- focus on 3-D shapes: cube, cone, sphere, cylinder
Second Grade
- focus on 2-D shapes: quadrilaterals (shapes with 4 sides), triangle, hexagon, rhombus, pentagon, octagon
- focus on 3-D shapes: cube, cone, sphere, cylinder
Third Grade
- focus on 2-D shapes: quadrilaterals and not quadrilaterals
Fourth Grade
- focus on lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), parallel lines, perpendicular lines
Fifth Grade
- focus on all above
Suggestions you can do at home:
- find shapes in your house and outside
- make the shapes - draw them, use toothpicks, playdough, pipe cleaners, fingers, string, etc.
- Guess My Shape! - describe the shape and have your child guess the shape
If you have any questions, please contact Anna Lisa Warner, Math Specialist, at annalisa.warner@fcps.org
Ready for Reading!
The research is clear: Children raised in homes that promote family literacy grow up to be better readers and do better in school than children raised in homes where literacy is not promoted. We know that promoting family literacy is important to future reading and school success. There are many ways families can support literacy at home through picture books, songs, poetry and storytelling. Here are a few suggestions:
Read aloud to your child and create a special place at home for books. Collect books for your child and build a mini library at home. Visit our free little library at Waverley or choose free books from the pink cart in the lobby at school. Borrow books from the school or public library. Your child can even make their own books to read to family members.
Tell stories as a family. Storytelling is a great way to share family history and to engage all family members even those who cannot read yet. Have a family member tell a story about a major family event (wedding, birthday, trip, etc.). Afterward, ask a younger family member to retell the story. This activity helps to build vocabulary, story sequencing and recall of information.
Encourage writing practice by having family members write notes to one another. Learning to read and learning to write go together. It is important to practice and encourage early writing skills with young children and those new to learning a language. Children should be encouraged to send notes at every stage of their development - from scribbles to sentences. This is a great way to support literacy development and reinforce the importance of writing to communicate information.
If you have any questions, please contact Trisha Kessler, Literacy Specialist at trisha.kessler@fcps.org.

The lending libraries serve as a place for parents, grandparents or any caring adult to borrow books to read at home and extend learning to home. Stop by and see what appeals to your family. Health Room News
Updated COVID-19 Information from the Health Room
· Fever of 100.4 F or higher
· Sore Throat
· Cough
· Difficulty Breathing
· Diarrhea
· Vomiting
· New onset of SEVERE headache (especially with fever)
· New loss of taste or smell
Students with chronic conditions such as asthma or allergies, the symptoms should represent a change from their baseline. However, the health room needs to have prior documentation in your student’s health file from a health care provider that states your student has a chronic condition.
**For example, if we call you to come and pick up your student for a COVID-19 symptom and you tell us it is related to their asthma, we will go and pull their health file. If it is not reflected in the students health file that they have asthma then unfortunately, we still have to treat it as a COVID-19 symptom. If your student has a chronic condition, we would ask you to please send us updated information from your health care provider as soon as possible.
You get a call from the health room that your student has a COVID-19 symptom and needs to be picked up… now what?
In order for your student to return to school ONE of the following needs to be done:
· The school receives a negative COVID test for the student OR
· The school receives a document from a health care provider stating that symptoms are due to a specific alternate diagnosis (Ex. Strep throat, otitis media, pre- existing condition such as asthma) OR
· Student completes a 10 day quarantine (they return on day 11)
AND student must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication and other symptoms must be improving.
**Unfortunately, we cannot accept a doctor’s note that just clears your student to return to school. We need to have an alternate diagnosis on the note.
Do you have multiple household members that attend the same school?
If you have multiple children (or household members) that attend the same school and one of them gets sent home for COVID-19 symptoms, ALL household members will be sent home. Other students from the same household will be sent home even if they do not have any symptoms. Students of the same household should not return to school until the person with the symptoms is able to return.
Do you have questions or concerns?
As many of you know, the guidelines and protocols surrounding COVID is constantly changing. We are doing our best to ensure that we keep our students safe and healthy when they are at school. As our guidelines and protocols change, we try to keep our community informed the best we can. If you have any questions or concerns regarding COVID-19 symptoms or on any of the information mentioned above, please do not hesitate to reach out to the health room.
Warm Regards,
Nurse Ashley

PANDEMIC BENEFITS CARD (P-EBT CARD)
- Students who are receiving SNAP benefits and are eligible for the P-EBT benefits will receive P-EBT cards. SNAP recipients who might have previously received their P-EBT benefits on their EBT card, will be mailed a P-EBT card. No P-EBT benefits will be issued on EBT cards.
- SNAP children under 6 will be mailed a P-EBT card. P-EBT cards will be mailed by the end of June.
- If your household does not receive SNAP benefits and your student is newly eligible for free and reduced meal programs or attends a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school you will be mailed a P-EBT card. P-EBT cards will be mailed by the end of June 2021.
- Students who already received a P-EBT card will receive their P-EBT benefits on the same card.
- You do not need to apply for P-EBT benefits. DHS will use records from local school systems to identify school-aged children who are eligible to receive benefits under this program. DHS will use SNAP records to identify children under six who are eligible under the childcare eligibility provision.
- Each eligible student will receive $6.82 per day if their school is closed or the majority of children in their school are virtual. If the majority of children in your school are hybrid learners, your benefit may be calculated based on the average number of virtual days in a given month.
- You may obtain a new card by calling the Maryland EBT Customer Service at 1-800-997-2222 or go to ConnectEBT.com. You will need to provide the child’s name, date of birth, last four (4) digits of the social security number (the same 4 digits used to activate the original P-EBT), and address to have a new card mailed to you. The replacement card may look different but works exactly in the same way as your original card. It will take 7-10 business days to receive a replacement card.
- Only children who qualify for free, or reduced-price lunch at school are eligible for P-EBT food benefits. Children who are homeschooled are not eligible for P-EBT. Please contact your school district with questions concerning access to the free or reduced-price school lunch program. You may apply for SNAP benefits (also known as the Food Stamps) benefits by clicking this link if you are not already enrolled in the program and your family needs help with purchasing food.
- P-EBT benefits are not transferable; therefore, you can’t give your benefits to someone else. Households that do not want to participate in the P-EBT program may destroy the P-EBT card when they receive it. The card can be destroyed by cutting through the magnetic stripe and disposing of it securely.
- Please contact your child’s school to update the address. If you believe your P-EBT may have been mailed to an incorrect address please complete the Customer Inquiry Form.
