This Week at GLOBE
News & Notes | March 2, 2022
From the Executive Director
Dear GLOBE community,
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for Monday night’s board meeting. These meetings are, as always, open to the community, but I’d like to also take a moment today to recap some key takeaways — particularly around our ongoing facilities issues.
As you may know, we have formed an official HVAC task force, which gathered for the first time last month. The challenge of overhauling our failing HVAC system remains a significant one, and we are grateful to the parents, teachers, and other qualified professionals who are giving their time to this effort.
In the past couple of weeks, multiple vendors that originally intended to bid on this project told us they were unwilling to do so; as a result, we need to find other vendors to provide us with quotes. We are currently interviewing for a construction project manager, who will help us identify those potential vendors, leading the request for proposal process and ultimately guiding the project through completion.
Completion, however, will take more time than anyone would like. We have five months before the next school year begins, and that is not enough time to complete a large-scale overhaul of our HVAC and electrical systems. Upon onboarding a construction project manager, we will engage them to deliver smaller-scale measures that ensure we are ready for a safe and healthy start to the next school year.
In the immediate term, we’re using commercial-grade dehumidifiers to ensure classrooms remain at safe humidity levels, even as temperatures warm. We’re also working to solidify swing space options, so we can be prepared for any issues that might arise.
Some other updates from the meeting:
- The admissions lottery took place last Friday 25. Admitted families have plenty of time to decide whether to accept their spots, but we are heartened by the faster-than-ever acceptance of so many of them. I believe that’s a testament to the strength of our school and the power of our community.
- Thanks to the hard work of our development committee and the generosity of our GLOBE community, we are on track to hit our fundraising goals for this year. Thank you! The funds raised will directly support critical programming for students, equipment upgrades, facility improvements, strategic planning, and professional development.
- We began a conversation about spending priorities for next year. This important discussion will continue over the next few months to ensure that the upcoming budget aligns with the vision for our school.
- The board elected two new members: Catherine Schwenkler, who will chair the academic committee, and Teri Williams, who will chair the governance committee.
Please read on for more of this week's news — and thank you, as always, for caring about GLOBE and being an engaged member of our community.
Sincerely,
Christi Elliott-Earby
Executive Director

Read Across America Day
Over the last couple of days, Kindergarten though 5th grade students celebrated Read Across America Day. Students brought in books, dressed up, and celebrated reading! At Lower Campus, students paraded around the playground, cheered on by other classes. Some students even discovered a "twin"! There were so many diverse characters and books. Thank you teachers, parents, and students for sharing your love of reading school-wide.
Science Week Challenge
The entry deadline for Science Week is tomorrow, March 3. Upload a video of your student doing a science experiment by adding the video to this folder. We will post each submission to the PTCC Facebook page and draw one winner from the Upper Campus and one winner from the Lower Campus. The deadline for challenge submissions is Thursday, March 3 at 5pm. Winners will receive an annual membership to Fernbank museum for the whole family! Full details can be found in the February 16 newsletter. If you have any questions, please send us an email.
STAMP Testing this month
Students in grades 2nd to 8th will take the Avant STAMP (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) 4SE (grades 2nd to 5th) in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, and Avant STAMP 4S (Grades 6th to 8th) in Reading Writing Listening, and Speaking in March.
The Avant STAMP 4SE and 4S tests cover real-world content and question types on students’ level. STAMP is an adaptive test that assesses language proficiency.
A score of 5 or higher in all modes on the STAMP 4S qualifies GLOBE 8th grade students for the Global Seal of Biliteracy.
STAMP testing will take place at Upper Campus on March 14 to 18 and Lower Campus on March 21 to 25. For more information on STAMP please visit Avant Assessment. For more information on the Global Seal visit Global Seal.
Host families wanted
GLOBE has applied for the French Teaching Intern (FTI) grant from the French Embassy, and the Spanish Conversation and Cultural Assistant (Auxiliares) grant from the Spanish Embassy. We are anxiously awaiting approval!
Pending approval, we will need amazing GLOBE families to share their home with an FTI or Auxiliar. Please contact Robyn Brandman, Host Family Liaison, at robynloren@gmail.com if you would love to host an FTI or Spanish Auxiliar.
Dress-down Thursdays
Lower Campus
Afternoon carpool
Please do not park on Briarwillow Drive. Parking there, particularly in the afternoon, makes pedestrian crossing on Heritage Drive especially difficult.

8th grade trip
Please login to MyPaymentsPlus to make sure you are up to date on payments for the 8th grade trip. At this time, you should have made at least two payments. The final payment is due on March 15. Please reach out to Mrs. Limor if you have any questions.
Summer Camp / Extended Care Program (ECP)
Summer Camp 2022
GLOBE is offering a one week language camp this summer to Kindergarten through 5th grade students. There will be three camps held during the following weeks: June 13 to 17, June 20 to 24, and June 27 to July 1. Registration is now open.

We have a limited number of aftercare spaces available. Email cclines@theglobeacademy.net for details.
Parent Teacher Community Council (PTCC)
Spirit Night
Thursday, March 24, at Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary in Lilburn, from 2pm to 6pm. A portion of tickets sold will go to support GLOBE!
We need you!
PTCC is seeking a co-lead for our communications efforts. This role will give you a chance to liaise between the board of directors and the GLOBE community. If you have two hours a week to spare, good writing skills, and you would like to get involved, we invite you to join ComCoor.
2022 GLOBE Annual Auction
We are now accepting donations for the The GLOBE Academy's PTCC Annual Spring Auction. This year's Auction will be a two-part event beginning with a silent auction (April 29), open and free for all through mobile bidding, and culminating with an in-person indoor/outdoor event (April 30) at Wild Heaven Brewery in Avondale Estates.
The Auction benefits all PTCC activities throughout the year including teacher appreciation, classroom resources, cultural events, International Fest, campus updates, Science Night and more. In order to make this possible, we need donations! Know of someone with a wonderful vacation home? Have a favorite boutique or fitness studio in the area? No donation is too big or small.
We also need volunteers to make the Auction a success. Email auction@theglobeacademy.net to volunteer to serve on the Auction Committee.

Viral Solutions will be back on campus again on Thursday, March 3 to provide all GLOBE students and staff with access to free rapid antigen testing. The positivity rates of each testing clinic can be found on tab 2 of the Data Dashboard. Results will be updated the day after each testing clinic occurs. If you would like to enroll your student in testing for the semester, you can fill out the consent form here. If you have questions about the testing process or how to receive your student's results, please read the FAQ flyer.
Vaccination survey
We would like to determine how many of our students are fully vaccinated. Understanding the vaccination coverage in our community will help us to make informed decisions about sporting events and meal time locations. To learn more and/or to notify us, click here.
